UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I CYRUS K. VILAS, OF ALSTEAD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
- FIRE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,105, dated July 11, 1882,
Application filedApril 18,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OYRUs K. VILAS, of Alstead, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdesoription.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved fire-box for stoves and heaters from which the ashes and clinkers can be removed very conveniently.
This invention relates to an improvementin fire-boxes of that class adapted to r'evolve and to be used either end downward or as a grate;
and it consists of a spherical or globe-shaped chamber or box provided with apertured or slotted covers covering opposite openings therein, combined with a stove or heater havingan opening in its bottom provided with beveled edges, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional elevation of a stove provided with my improved fire-box. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the fire-box, showing it detached from the stove.
The fire-box A is made of cast metal orother suitable material, and in the shape of a globe or any other suitable shape, and is provided with two opposite apertures, which are closed by pivoted lids B, which are curved to form a part of the fire-box when they rest over the openings. The lids are provided with numerous apertures, G, or slots, so that they can serve as grates. The lids are each pivoted to the firebox at one of their ends, and at the other ends are provided with a handle-stud, D, and can be locked in position on the fire-box by means of spring-latches E, of any suitable construction. The lids are preferably pivoted to move sidewise, but can be pivoted or attached to the fire-box in any other suitable manner. The fire-box is provided with two opposite projecting pivots, F, journaled in the sides within the stove or heater G, one of which pivots has a squared end to receive a key for rotating the fire-box. The bottom H of the stove or heater G is provided with a circular aperture, J, provided with beveled edges H, against which the covers or lids can fit so closely that all the draft must pass through the fire-box, and cannot pass around the firebox or covers. The fire-box may be made larger or smaller, as may be desired.
The operation is as follows: One of the lids B is opened and wood and coals are placed in the fire-box, and are then ignited, the draft passing through into the fire-box through the apertures of the. lower lid B and escaping through the other lid. If the ashes are to be removed, the fire-box is rocked by swinging the same to and fro by means of a key on pivot F, provided with a squared end. Then the globe or fire-box is inverted, so that the bottom lid B will be at the top. If this lid is opened, the oinders and clinkers can be removed and fresh coals placed in the fire-box. The fire-box may remain in this position until a fresh quantity of coals is again required. It will not always be necessary to shake the fire-box to remove the ashes, for by overturning the fire-box the coals, cinders, and ashes in the same will be shaken so thoroughly that the ashes will drop through the apertures of the bottom gratecover. 11? the fire-box must be adjusted higher or lower to fit closely in the openings J, washers can be placed under the pivots FFtoraise the same, or the washers can be removed, as the case may be; or it maybe raised or lowered in any other convenient manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the spherical or globeshaped fire box or chamber, adapted to' revolve, and having the slotted or apertured covers, of the stoveor heater provided in its bot tom with an opening having the upper beveled edge, substantially as herein set forth.
CYRUS K. VILAS.
