1 `l A I I No. 828,545 Specifrcationof Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 14., 1906.
Application filed Febrnary, 1905. Serial No. 244.035.
To allI when-1, t may concern:
I' andina rearward direction. Said trarne forms 13e it known that I, THOMAS HAMMER, a la box-like structure the. downward movecitizen of the United States, residlng' at Portment of which is limitedy by Supporting- .Y
land, in the countyof Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Grate for Cooking-Stoves, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to grates for stoves, esplecially forcooking-stoves and ranges; andl it as for itsobject to provide a simple and efficient device whereby the gratelnay be adjusted vertically within the combustionchaiinber to regulate and control the heat and the combustion of fuel. .With these and other ends in view, which will' readily appear as the nature of the invention 'is better understood, the same consists in the iinproved'construction and novell arrangement andcom'bination of parts which will be 'hereinafter fully described, and 'particularly pointed out in the claim..
In the acccmpanyl fg drawings has been illustrated .va-simple andpreferred form ofthe invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation i'snecessarily made to the' preci'se structural details therein exhibited, but. that changesk alterations, and .modifications within the scope of the inventionvniay' be.;
`vmade when desired.
in tne drawings, F'giire 1 is a broken sectional elevation of a portion of a cokfstove, taken longitudinally through the irecham- `ber and showing the improvements applied.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the V`line -ot Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a sectional view Fig. 4 is a broken side view of .a grate-frame detached.
i`1'gf5 a detail View in section on the line v5 5 in Fig. 1'. 'Fig'. 6 is a detail view in section on. the line-6 6 of Fig. 1
Vlorresp'onding part-s `in the several figures are 'indicated throughout by similar char. acters of reference.
The im roved device may be applied with slight an unimportant modifications to any olthe various forms and sizes of' the combastion-chambers of cook-stoves and ranges. For the purpose of illustration the invention has been shown applied to a-conventional form of combustion-chamber (represented at 10 and inclosed within a stove-casing',l 11";
4 Supported for vertical movement within the eombust'ion-chamberv 10 is a frame I2, having vertical side walls 10 and Haring front and rear walls 7 and 8 ,the said front and rear wmlleleing dared. respectively, in a forward being made to any particular form of grate structure. y
Mounted for rotation in the ash-pit at the lower end of the comliustion-chamber are spi'cedI shafts 17 1,8-, one of which extends t 'ough the wall ofthe stove-casing 11 to res ceive an operating handle or crank, the shafts being also provided with interrneshing piu ions 19 20, so that they may be rotated simultaneously when the handle is applied to the shaft 17. Said shafts are also provided with crank-arms 21 22, the free ends of which are connected with lugs 6 up'on the under side ci the grate-frame 12 by means of links 23 '2a.v
On of the shafts 17 or 18, preferably the one to which the operating-crank appiied, provided with a ratchet-wheel 25, adapted to be engaged by a-pawl 26, which is pivotedin teriorly upon the stove-cajsing and which is provided with an operating knob or handle 27,5I extending through the stove-casing to enable the pawl to be operated from the ext ion he flaring front wail of the grate-trarne 12 constitutes a deflector, which extends over the pinions 19 20, ratchetfivljieei 25, and pawl 26 to etrevcnt cinders or ashes from settling upon said parts, thereby interfering with the operation thereof. The daring iront and rear walls 7 S will also have a tendency to .guide any fuel that may be placed in the con.
bustion-chainber ,away from the walls of the latter and in the direction of the grate in y the bottom of the-frame 12, so that when the 'said frame is raised or lowered the fuel will not scrape upon the walls of the combustionchalnber and cause a degree of friction which ,might interfere with the successful operation of the device.
It will be seen that by rotating the shaft 17 in one direction the crank-arms 21 22 and links- 23 24 will elevate or depress the grate- IOC IOS
IIO
thus reguleting and controlling the heet sind the emount ol" fuel eonsui'ned. Thus in hot weather or at tinies when only a smell lire is required the grote may be elevated to a oint near the griddles, where the heat may lie fully utilized, will be obvious. The grote-frame constitutes a shallow" fuel-receptacle within which a small lire may be conveniently built :md maintained, while b v lowerinpr the said gizrte-fieliie to e de )ressed position the eepoeily of the fuel-chamber will be materially increased. When 'the grate-frame is in a. lowered position, es illustrated in Fig. 2, it will be rnily supported upon the lainges 14 l5, und the lifting devues will thus be relieved of unnecessary strain to which they might otherwise be subjected when the grate in the frame s'shu-ken or the lire is dumped, und the flaring frontA end woll serves to protei-,t the operative .parts of the lifting rneehanism.
Hoving thus described the invention, what is claimed isi In a stove, u, combustion-ehmnber, sup'- porting-flanges upon the side Walls of seid chamber, a freine vertically slidoble in the upper port of the eoinbustion-ehamber .and adapted to rest upon the supportin #flanges seid vframe having a flaring front wel a gra-te in the bottom of seid frame, o, pair of shafts su pported in the eeinbusiton-chamber be* 11e-ith the grate-frame, interineshing pinions upon said shafts, cra11karms extending from the shafts, links connecting said arms with'` the grate-frame, fr retehet-wheel upon one of the shafts, and a' manuell y-operable pawl engaging seid ratchet; the intermeshmg;r pinions and the pftwl and ratchet being disposed beneath the inclined front wall of the vertically-slidoble grate-frame and thereby shielded from material dropping through the grate.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing' as my own'I have hereto uixed my signature in the presence of'two Witnesses.
THOMAS J. HAMMER. Vlitnesses:
D. L. MoLEoi),v W. E. LACEY.
