Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EMILE F. ESPERAN- DIEU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Incinerators for Garbage, Excrement, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the 'art to which it appertains to make anduse the same,
reference being had to the accompanying posal of the garbage or excrement at the points of accumulation, in a quick and eilicacious manner and without the presence of offensive and dangerous odors.
To this end my invention consists of certain details of construction, all of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved incinerator. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of Fig. 1, taken in the line what. Fig. 3 is atop plan view, with portions broken away to show interior construction. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the jointed twoart valve. Flg. 5 is a section taken in the ine 2 2 of Fig; 4.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is'the metallic casing, within which are arranged the operative arts. It rests upon the legs 2 and is provi ed in its top with an opening or seat 3, closed by the cover 4.
5 is the fire-box withv door 6 and 7 is the ash-pit with door 8.
9 is the metallic pot or receptacle, suspended above the fire-box 5 upon trunnions, the opening 10 of the removable frame 11.
12 isa vertical draft-passage, connecting the upper space 13, between th'e pot 9 and the top of the casing, with the ash-pit 7. A passage 14 connects the upper space 13 in the casing 1, with the smoke-pipe 15. This passage 14 has an opening 16 in its top wall, in which is arranged a valve consisting of the two parts 17 and 18, the part 17 being hinged to the top wall of the passage and the part 18 being centrally hinged to the part 17, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
In operation, to burn the accumulation inthe pot V9, the two-part valve 17 18, is left partially open, as shown in Fig. 2, to admit a current of air through opening 16, which passes across the upper space 13, down the draft-passage 12, into the ash-pit 7, then up through the grate-bars 19, into the lire-box 5 and passing through the opening 10, in the removable late 11, being confined to that portion of tile openin which the lower portion of the receptaclJ 9 does not close or cover, and through the annular space above removable frame 11, it is carried through the communicating smoke-pipe 15. In this manner all odors and products of combustion from the pot 9, are thoroughly consumed andcarried 0E through the smokepipe 15. When my incinerator is in use as a closet, the two-part valve 17 18, is closed across the opening 16, as shown in Fig. 5 and all -odors are then carried direct to the smokepipe, through the passage 14. The two-part va Ve 17 18 may entirely close the passage 14 to the` stack, yet at the same time may bev fed in' manipulated so as to govern the air through the opening 16, or the opening 16 may be closed, in which case indirect communication with the smoke-stack is established. Thus graduated communication with the atmosphere may be established, or indirect communication with the stack, but both cannot eXistat the same time. The seat is reached by the steps 20.
I claim. y
A garbage or eXcrement incinerator comprising a portable metallic casing a grate dividing, the casing into a lire-box in its upper portion, and an ash-pit in its lower portion; a metallic receptacle situated in the upper portion of the lire-box and spaced from the top of the casing, said incinerator being formed with a passage, forming a .communication between the space above said receptacle and the ash-pit 5 a smoke-pipe communicating directly w1th the fire-box; a passage communieating with the' smoke-pipe and with the s ace above the receptacle for disposing of tile back-draft, and provided with an opening for admitting air, a damper or vvalve in said passage for simultaneously closing the In testimony whereof7 have signed my passage from the smoke-pipe and placing the name to this specication, in the presence of' space above the receptacle in graduated two subscribing Witnesses.
