To ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCEiRNQ Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SMITH, of Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in: 8. Combination for. Wood or Coal-Burning Cook- Stoves; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, inwhichl A Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of the cook-stove.

V I t The object of my invention is to provide in a cook-stove all of the requisite means for much or little lire, to be used for cooking purposes, so that inthe winter, when all the heatis desirable for warming the room, a large coal fire can be made in the cylinder, and in the summer, when it is desirable to do the cooking, and have as little'heat as possible, a fire of light dry wood can be built in. the fire-box at the other end of the stove, and be i brought to hear more closely with the cooking-utensils and the oven, so that comparatively buts-small amount of heat will be radiated into the room. l i i My invention consists in providing a shallow square fire-box in one end of acook stove, with aspace under-' neath, which may be used for drying small wood, chips, or any other thing suitable for a quick summer fire, and having a large flat heating-top extending over a cylindrical coal-burning'fire-box in the other end, with a coal'sifter uhderneath the grate,'and ash-drawer sothat the fine coal is separated from the ashes and replaced in the cylinder without being taken away from the stove. I

That others may be enabled to make and use my improved combination cook-stove, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and-to the letters marked thereon. a I Z,

l The base, A, is along flat-plate casting ofany size'de'sirable, snpportedat or near each corner on legs B B, having at one end asunken bottom-Q, in which is fitted a coal-sifter, b, with a handle, 0, extending out on one side for operating it. Underneath the'coal-sifter is drawer, D,'to receive the ashes, and remove them.

In the base-plate A, at one end, is a circularop enin'g, d, over the coalsitter, on which is placed a large cylindrical coal-fire box, E, wit-h a grate, e, in the "usual manner. At the other end of the base-plate A, is placed the wood-fire box F, with a door,-f,in the endfor putting in long wood; the fire-box F being shallow only about one-half of the depth of the cylinder E. The bottom plate g, forming the hearth of the wood-fire box,';is elevated on arches h It, leaving aconsiderable space,G, between it and the base-plate A, in which kindling-woo'd; or anything may be put to dry, or be kept off the floor out of the way. p i I Above and resting on the top of both the wood-fire boss F, and the cylindrical coal-firebox E, is the long e l fiat portion or box H H, which makes the top of thestove for both fires,-and covers over the surface of the baseplate A, so as to leave a large space between the plate and the top portion of the stove 'around and between the cylinder E and box F, to place things on for keeping warm. The top of the stove, H H, may have any desired number of holes, II I.I,with lids, bothin the region of-the coal and wood fireplaces for bciilere, or hettles,&c. i

The top portion of the stove H H being divided into three compartments, across between the two fire-boxes, with openings in the divisions to be closed by hinged dampers J J, as required, over the central compartment L is the elevated arched olven K, with doors in each end, also holes, I Z Z, for cleaning around the oven, on the top of which is the socket is for the stove-pipe, so that, by'clo'sing one of the dampers, either fire-box may be shut ofi from communicating'with the oven, or, by opening both of the dampers, both fire-boxes are in communication. The dampers also serve -the purpose of regulating'thc draught inboth of thefire-boxes by clo'sing or partly closing one or the other as desired. i

7 Thus it will be'seen that all of the requisites necessary for a practical summer and winter cooking-stove are combined in one, as also the other great conveniences of sifting the ashes from the finecoal' before taken from the stove,'and places for drying andkeeping fuel for a speedy use, and warming-thing's generally in win erg;

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The base A, cylinder coal-fire box E atone end, and a. wood-fire box, F, elevated on arches; h h at the other, as eonstructed and arranged, in combination with the top H H, dampers J J, and oven K, operating in the manner as and for the purpose herein set forth.
