J. J. B. FREY.
SLO]? SAFE FOR WATER OLOSETS.
No. 260,967. Y
Patented July 11-, 18r8 2imvnmrok:
BY ATTORNEYS WITNESSES 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH J. B. FREY, on NEW YORK, ,N. Y.
SLOP-SAFE FOR WATER-CLOSETS.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,967, dated July 11, 1882.
Application filed April 29, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOSEPH J. B. Fear, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slop-Safes for Water-Closets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
In most modern or better kinds of waterclosets it is customary to hinge the seat of the closet to the box or frame thereof, so that said seat may be thrown back or raised, and to lay on or over the top of the bowl a plate or cover made of the same material as the bowl or of any other material that is impervious to water on its surface, such plate having a hole through it corresponding with the hole in the seat when the latter is shut down over said plate. This device is usually termed a slop-safe or driptray, and its main use is to form a conductor to and marginal cover around the top of the bowl when the seat is raised for emptying slops into the bowl, or when the closet is used as a urinal, and whereby soiling or wetting the seat isprevented.
The invention consists in providing the slopsafe or drip-tray with a flushing rim or sprinkler for washing its upper surface with fresh water, whereby slop or urine and objectionable odor are removed from said safe.
The invention also consists in a slop-safe for water-closets provided with flushing rims or devices on both its inner and outer margins, one of which is for washing the upper surface of the safe, and the other of which is for cleaning the interior of the bowl and for supplying it with fresh water. Such improved slop-safe maybe applied as a separate structure to any bowl, and, when provided with both inner and outer flushing rims or devices, dispenses with the necessity of any special flushing construction of the bowl itself.
Reference-is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of a water-closet having my improved slop-safe applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, upon a larger scale, of the bowl of the closet with said slop-safe in its place thereon; and Fig. 3 shows (No model.)
a longitudinal inner face view of a fresh-water distributer for washing the upper surface of the slop-safe.
In the drawings, A indicates the box or frame of the closet, andB its hinged seat, which is represented as raised.
0 is the bowl, made of porcelain or any other suitable material, and which may be made of any desired size and shape, but without the usual flushing channel or rim.
D is the slop-safe or drip-tray, that may also be made of porcelain, metalhaviugan enameled surface, or any suitable material, and which is constructed around its inner margin with a flushing channel or rim, D, for washing the bowl and for supplying it with fresh water. This slop-safe with the flushing-rim D formed in or on it is a separate structure, which is seated on the bowl,.as and for the purposes hereinbefore referred to, and said flushing channel or rim may be of any desired shape and be formed with any suitable outlet or outlets, b, for distributing the fresh water to the bowl. Such water is supplied to said flushing-rim from the cistern of the closet by a tubular passage or inlet branch, d, formed in or on the safe, and which is connected outside of the bowl with a suitable supply-pipe,the admission of water being controlled by a pull-rod, as usual in water-closets.
G is a hollow flushing rim or sprinkler for washing the upper surface of the slop-safe. This device, which is supplied with water by a branch, 0, from the inlet d, is here shown as a separate structure, and as only extending along and above the front outer margin of the slop-safe, and as having distributing-perforations f in its inner face; but it may be made to form an integral part of said safe, be of different shapes, and, if necessary, be extended along each outer marginal side of the safe or any of them. If desired, a stop-cock may be applied to the branch e for regulating the discharge of water from the distributer G, or for shutting off said discharge when necessary.
My improved slop-safe may be dealt in and sold as a separate article of manufacture suit- .able for water-closets of diflTerent kinds.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters with flushing rims or devices on both its inner Patentand outer margins, substantially as described. 10
1. A slop-safe for Water-closets, provided with a flushing-rim or sprinkler arranged along J OS. J. B. FREY.
5 one or more of the outer marginal sides of said safe, for washing the upper surface thereof, Witnesses:
essentially as described. A. GREGORY, 2. A slop-safe for water-closets, provided 0. SEDGWIGK.
