UNITED STATES ELMER HASLETT, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Application filed May 11,
This invention relates to bidets and has for an object to provide an improved bidet which may be quickly and easily attached to and detached from standard water closet or toilet seats upon which it may be supported, without the use of tools; with which its contents may be drained into the bowl of the toilet upon the seat of which it may be supported, without removing the bidet from the seat; and which when not in use may be collapsed into a relatively small, compact and conveniently handled and stored article.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved bidet of this type which will be sanitary and relatively simple and inexpensive.
Various other objects and advantages will appear from the following description of an embodiment of the invention, and the novel features will be particularly. pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of part of a toilet having attached thereto a bidet constructed in accordance with the inven tion;
Figure 2 is a plan of the same;
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation similar to Figure l but with the bidet arranged to drain its contents.
Figure 4: is a sectional elevation somewhat similar to Figure l, of a portion of a toilet having attached thereto a. bidet also constructed in accordance with the invention, but illustrating another embodiment of the invention;
Figure his a plan of the same;
Figure 6 is a sectional elevation as in Figure 4, but with the bidet basin filled with a liquid ready for use; and Figure 7 is a view corresponding to Fig ure 6, but with the seat of the toilet partially raised to illustrate the manner of draining the liquid from the bidet basin into the toilet bowl after use ofthe toilet.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 an improved bidet 1 is attached to the usual seat ring 2 of the ordinary toilet seat which is supported above the usual bowl the ring being hinged to the bowl top by the usual arms 2* connected to the pintle 2 The bidet is formed of a basin section 4: depending into the bowl 3,
1926. Serial N0. 108,420.
and having a flange 5 extending peripherally along its open edge, and overlying the seat ring 2 by which it is supported. The basin section at is provided along its rear end with a laterally extending or elongated sllt or aperture 6 in its bottom wall, through which its contents may be drained into the bowl of the closet.
A partition wall 7 of flexible waterproof material is secured to the bottom and side walls of the basin section immediately in front of the aperture or slit 6, and is con siderably wider than the width 01": the basin section across which it is connected, so that when it is upstanding, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 it will be slightly folded along vertica-l or upstanding folds. When the partition wall is upstanding, as in Figures 1 and 2, it lies against the rear end wall oi the basin section and closes the latter. When dropped down through the slit or aperture 6, as shown in Figure 8, it uncovers the slit or aperture 6 and permits drainage of the basin contents into the toilet or closet bowl.
The central part of the partition wall is elongated as a tongue 8 which extends over the flange 5 so as to be supported therefrom when the partition wall is upstanding to close the basin section.
The improved bidet, in its broadest aspects, may be formed of any suitable material, but preferably the basin section, at least, is of flexible, waterproof material. The entire bidet is also preferably formed of a. one piece, molded, flexible, resilient rubber, and the flange 5 may then have a turned over or hooked edge 9 which may be snapped over the periphery of the closet or toilet seat ring 2 upon stretching the flange 5 slightly so as to enlarge its dim-err sions. The engagement of the hooked edge with the ring of the seat serves as an efl'ective means of attachment to the seat. In such a case the tongue 8 may be made of a length sufiicient to extend over the rear end of the seat ring 2 and flange 5,and be hooked under the hooked edge 9 at the rear, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Then when the flange 5 is snapped over the seat ring after the tongue has first been turned under the flange 9 and attached first at the rear ofthe seat, the tongue 8 will be trictionally anchored and will hold the partition wall upstanding. The tongue 8 may be pulled closet or toilet, the tongue 8 is first folded under or around the flange am the rear, that is, under the hook 9 of the flange 5, and
' both tongue 8- and the rear end of the flange 5hooked over the rear end of the seat-ring. Theflangeo is then stretched and snapped over the seat ring all of the way around, as shownin Figures 1 and 2, so that the bidet entirely covers" and adhers to the seat. W ateror other. liquid may then be placed in'the basin section. A person usingthe bidet may sit upon it, preferably facing the rear because the seats are usually wider at the rear. which gives more room for the handsin performing the usual operation.
At the conclusion of the operation, the tongue 8- may be pulled out from under the hook 9 of: the flange 5, and passed through the slit 6 as shown in Figure 3, allowing passage .of the basin sect-ion contents into the bowl of the toilet. The bidet may then be flushed out, wiped dry with a towl, removed from the seat. folded and stored away. c
. In Figures 4 to 7 another embodiment of the "invention is illustrated, in which the parts of the usual toiletor water closet are designated by the same reference numerals as in Figures 1 to 3. In the embodiment of the invention, the basin section 10 of .the bidet is suspended within the bowl 3 of the toilet by its circumferentially extending flange 11.
The flangell terminates 'at-its free edge in a hook portion 12 which is adapted to snap over the outer circumferential edge of the seat ring 2 whenjthe flange 11 is stretched outwardlyand forwardly s'omewhat,after its 'r earfedge has first been hooked over the rear edgeof the seat ring, as explained in connection with the embodiment of Figures Instead of theslit ,6 and the partition Wall 7 ofFigures 1 to 3, the basin section 10 is provided in its rear end wall with a.
horizontally elongated opening13 dischargthe toilet;
ing into relatively flat 'tubular rearward extension .14. The opening 13 is located in the rear wall of the basin section 10 at a point Several inches above the bottomwall, and the tubular extension depends into the bowl of In'the use of theembodiment of the invention shown in Figures 4 to 7, the flange 11 is attached-to the toilet seat by stretch"- ing it and snapping its hooked edge 12 thereover, as explained, with thebasin depending into the toilet bowl as shown in Figure 4.
Thebasin section is then filled to the desired extent below the level of the opening 13, as shown in Figure 6. The bidet may then be used in the usual manner, and then the seat may be raised slowly to the position shown in Figure 7 and then higher, so as to allow drainage of the liquid in the bidet basin through the opening 13 and the tubular extension 14 into the toilet bowl.
The seat may again be lowered. the basin section flushed with clean water and the scat slowly elevated to discharge the flush water. The bidet may then be wiped dry or allowed to dry and then removed and stored.
Such an embodiment of the bidet is also preferably made of molded flexible resilient rubber, particularly the flange portion, and is easily collapsed into a flat compact bundle for storage.
It will be obvious that various changes in the details and materials, which have been herein described and illustrated in order to explain the nature of the invention, may be made by those skilled in the art within the principle and scope of the invention.
