ATTOQNEYS Patented July 29, Y1952 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFic-Er i f j l I I I' 2,604,626 'l 'l V naar UNDERGARMENT "Irene R.Springeld,Mass. v l v Application September 15, 1950, SerialNo. 185,114 Y An object of this invention is to provide an improved garment for infants requiring ldiapers in which the securement of the diaperto the garmentis eiected without injuring the body of the garment and in a manner; to materiallyfenhance the comfort of the infant.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved garment for an infant requiring diapers which is provided with means for the passage therethrough of the corners of the diaper to be secured, whereby the securing elements for the diaper do not pass through the body of the garment.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved garment for an infant requiring diapers in which the securement of the diaper to the garment may be effected with smaller securing elements.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an undergarment for an infant requiring diapers which is relatively simple in structure and cheap to manufacture.
The above and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent upon consideration of the following detailed description of the invention, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the baby garment of the present invention shown on a baby and secured to a diaper without injury to the body of the garment and vin aA manner to materially enhance the comfort ofthe baby;
' Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the baby garment of the present invention;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational view showing the side portion of the baby garment illustrated in Figures 1 and 2; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, there is shown the baby garment of the present invention, generally designated by the reference numeral I0, which includes a garment body II having a neck opening I2 and spaced shoulder openings I3 and 'I4 cooperating to form theshoulder straps I 5 vand I8. The garment body has an open bottom I1 so that the garment I0 Acan be extended over the `head and shoulders oi the child, Figure 1, into a posltion 2` I surrounding the upper portion of the childs body'. M
On each side of thefgarment body'contiguous to and spacedl from Athe zopen bottom I'Ir thereof there is provided a' pair of transversely spaced, longitudinally extending slots, designated `by' the referencenum'erals IIlb and'IS, and 2I.\,2"II. The slots I8 to 2I, inclusive;` are ,for the, 4passage therethrough ofthe corners of a diaper to" be fastened together.v As clearly shown in Figure 1, a diaper 30 is shown surrounding the lower portion of the body of the child and having the corners 3|, 32 extended through the slots I8, I9 and detachably secured together by means of the safety pin 33. This manner of securement requires a smaller safety pin, since the safety pin does not have to be extended through the adjacent portions of the garment to thereby effect the securement of the diaper 30 to the garment I0. Further, holes will not be punched in the garment body II, since the safety pin is not engaged with the body.
Circumposed about each slot of each pair and secured to the adjacent portions of the garment body II are the reinforcing structures 23 and 24. Each of the reinforcing structures is fabricated of a relatively strong and durable cotton-containing material and is secured in abutting relation with respect to the adjacent portions of the garment body I I by means of the stitching 25 and 26. Each of the reinforcing structures 23 and 24 is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending, transversely spaced slots disposed in alignment with respect to the slots I8 to 2|, irl'-` clusive. Engaged about the bounding wall of each slot of each pair and secured to the adjacent portionsV of the garment body and reinforcing structures 23 and 24 is the binding, generally designated by the reference numeral 21. The binding 21 may be in the form of buttonhole stitching which assures the firm securement of the bounding portions of thel apertures provided in the body II-to the bounding portions of the aperturesprovided in the reinforcing structures 23 and, 24.
In actual use, the garment I0 is assembled about the body of the child, as shown in Figure 1,l whereupon the free ends'of the diaper 30 can be extended lthrough the adjacent pair'of 1 slots.
The securement ofthe corners, such-as the cor-A ners 3|, 32, can be eii'ected by meansof thesafety pin 33 without injury to the body II of the gar- I materially enhance ment I0, andina mannerto the comfort ofthe infant.
Although only one `embodimentof thev garment j lof the present invention has been described, it
is readily apparent that numerous modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the' invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is:r Y
1. In a baby garment for covering the body of a baby above the Waist and having a neck opening in the upper end and spaced shoulder openings coo*pferating?jto,` form shoulderstrapsv and having theflower end fopen, vthe improvement consisting of a pair of transversely spaced longitudinally extending slots formed in each side o jizrfvsaid garment contiguous to and spaced from said n open bottom for the passage therethrough ofthe corners of a diaper to be fastened together whereby said corners may beusecured together separately of said baby garment, rein'forcing means circumposed about each slot of each'pairand secured to the adjacent portions of said garment body, and binding means. engaged about the bounding Wall o' eachy slot of each pair and secured 'to sadadjacent portions of said' gars rnentbody and said reinforcing, means...
V2.v In afbab v.gari'nent`for covering thebody-of 25 a baby above the waist and having anecl; openins in the upper end and spaced 'shoulder' open:- ins cooperating to form shoulder straps' and having the rlower .end open, the improvement consisting of a pair of transversely spaced longitudinally extending slots formed in each side of said garment contiguous to and spaced from said open bottom for the passage therethrough of the corners of a diaper to be fastened together, whereby said corners may be secured together separably of said baby garment, reinforcing means circumposed about each of said slots of each pair and secured to the adjacent portions of said garment body, said reinforcing means each including a piece of cotton-containing material rsecured in confrontingy and abutting'. relation With respect to said adjacent portions of said garment body and provided with a pair of slots registering with said first-named pair of slots, and binding means engaged about the bounding A Walls of each pair of registering slots and sey lcured thereto.
