Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11-, 1914.
7 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josorn B. Tnonrn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Highlandville, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts. have invented an Improvement in Infants Bands. of which the following description. in connection with the accompanying drawings. is a spe ifieation, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to underclothine! and pertains more particularlv to an infants band," so-oalled, having improved provision for attachment of a diaper or the like.
The character of the invention may be best understood by reference to a specific illustrative embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing. in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of an infants band embodying; the invention; Fig. 2a a side elevation thereof: Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of a flap for attachment of the diaper or the like; and Fig. 4 is a detail section. on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, the garment comprises preferably a cylindrically knitted body portion 5. having its upper and lower extremities secured against raveling in any practirable manner, as by having an overstitohed binding 6-6. may be. equipped with any suitable means for supporting it in position, as the shoulder straps 77, which, as illustrated, pass over the shoulders of the wearer. Each of the straps 77 is preferably secured, front and rca r. to the upper. bound edge 6 of the body portion The body portion 5 hasprovision for the attachment of a diaper or other nether garment; and the same may be conveniently provided on depending flaps S-8. Preferably there are. two of these flaps, positioned near the middle of the {rarment at front and rear. Each of the spe- ('ifio illustrative flaps 88 comprises two thicknesses of material (see Fig. 4), placed face to fare-rand bound at their upper edges to an edge of the body member 5. The at l1'.l(lll'll(.nt of the flap 8 to the body member 5 mav be effected in any przu-tiral manner: and i! is preferably surh that the still-bin! or th like by which the two are rouuoelod. servos also to bind the respective edges thereof against raveling, as illustrated at S) in Fig. 4'. Preferably, also, the edges of the The body portion 5 two fla pieces are bound together against raw-cling as at 10 in Fig. l
The general tvpc of infants band hereinbefore described, except for details of construction, has been used prior to my invention: and the flaps, or other garment-supporting, portions thereof, have heen'used to receive a safety pin or the like, whereby the diaper or other garment is attached thereto.
The frequent removal and replacement of nether garments, involved repeated insertion and withdrawal of the safety pins-or other attaching means; and the pins were rarely if ever inserted twice. in the same plane, thistending of course to very dostrnetive wear upon the garment-sup mrtiug portion of the bend; and in nm'isoquem'e said portion would. in use, deteriorate much more rapidly than the other parts of thehand. which receive comparatively little wear. To avoid this diffieulty. the present invention contemplates the provision of special means for preserving an infants band or the like from such destructive wear, so that the gar meat-supporting portion. and therefore the band as a whole; may have a tune prolonged period of utility. To illustrate this feature of the invention, 1 have shown two pin-receiving eyelets 1!, I]. As shown in Fig. 4, each of these eyelets :iay consist of an aperture extending thmu gh both of the Mn members and suitably reinforced at its edges so as to supply strong bearing to support the pull of tlfe pin. llm-h eyelet it may be bilttonhole-stitched: and the stitches preferably engage both of the [lap anemia-rs and bind them firmly and strmgiy togt thez. The eyelets t l. 11, or their mguivaleuts. may be duplicated no. the front and rear flaps S-R. or on such other part of the body portion 5 as may constitute the garment-sup. porting part ,thereof. The safety pin or other anuncut-supporting means may be passed through the eyelets H, H; and thereby the strains upon said pin will be transmitted through the hut'touhole-stitohiug or the like to a wide area of the surrounding material. 7
When a two-part flap, or other garmentholding portion, used, with the eyelet reinfor ement binding the two parts together, the distribution of thc strains of the pin is even wider, since the several wales of one part are bound tofirther with the correspoluliug wales of a other part, and the two groups combined to give very desirable strength for the support of the pin.
The binding together of neighboringu'ales, by means of the buttonhole-stitching nrun equivalent reinforcement, causes the pin to exert an oblique strain upon some of the wales, for instance, those adjacent the horizontal extremities of the reinforcement. This oblique strain is transmitted as a trans verse pull upon still other intermeshing wales; and thus the strain from two or more eyelets is distributed throughout substan tially the entire flap or other garment-supporting portion of the band. Since substantially the entire flap contributes thus to the support of the pin, it follows that the pulls thereon are transmitted to the body portion 5 throughout substantially the width of the attached edges of the flap and body portion, whereby the latter is relieved from such localized distortion as resulted from straining only one or two adjacent wales in the absence of an eyelet or the like. Also, it follows that the strains are distributed and taken up by the body portion, not only vertically but also obliquely, so that they are sustained by the resulting lateral contraction of the band on the body of the wearer, as well as by the shoulder straps or their substitute.
It is to be understood that the invention is not essentially limited to the particular details of construction hereinbefore described. It is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly, since they may be used to advantage separately.
Claim:
An infants band comprising, in combine tion, a cylindrical elastic body portion (5) of circularly-lcnit fabric having its edges bound; and knitted separate flaps (8, 8) having bound upper edges with extensive attachment to the bound lower edges of the body portion, each fla com )rising at plurality of thicknesses of linitte material hav: ing a pair of eyelets (11) bindin together a large number of wales of each ap thickness and binding together also the plurality of flap thicknesses wherebystrains upon the eyelets are transmitted divergingly to a large number of wales of the knitted flap thicknesses and thence to the extensivev bound attachment between the flap thick nesses and the cylindrical body portion.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
