Patented Dec. 16, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ERNEST W. ROBISCHON, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, F ONE-HALF TO- FRANK CHODOROV AND ONE-HALF TO STEP-IN-ALL UNDERWEAR CORPORATION, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS UNDERWEAR GARMENT Application filed May 7,
This invention relates to improvements in underwear garments and is directed particularly to garments of the step-in type.
The principal objects of the invention are the provision of certain novel features of construction, which co-operate to provide a garment which is convenient to step into, comfortable to wear and which is arranged to act as a support in certain respects.
The novel features and advantages of the invention will be observed from the following description of.the'invention which for purposes of disclosure is illustrated in the form at present preferred in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a garment embodying the novel features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the lower portion of the garment shown in Fig. 1 embodying a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the appearance of the garment on a wearer, and
Fig. 4 is a small scale perspective view taken at the rear of a wearer when in a stooped position. Referring to the drawing in detail the invention will now be described.
The garment as shown in Fig. 1 comprises front and rear sections 2 and 4 of fabric which are cut so as to provide .neck and arm openings N and A at the upper side thereof. These sections may be cut from fabric and stitched together at the sides and shoulders or of course they may be made integral by a knitting operation. It will be noted that there areno depending leg embracing exten- SlOllS.
A slit 8 extending downwardly from the neck opening in the front section 2 is provided and arranged so that overlapping portions of the front section at this point may be retained in closed or overlapped relation by co-operating fastening devices such as a. button and buttonhole of usual form at 10.
lVith the slit unbuttoned the garment may be opened up at the neck sufiiciently to allow a person to put the garment on by stepping into it. It is then drawn upwardly onto the body the arms are slipped through the arm 1929. Serial No. 361,114.
at the front and rear of the garment to fit cut-outs in the sections 2 and 4. The rear tapering or V-shaped end portion of the gusset section 12 is secured at its opposite edges to the rear section 2 by stitching indicated at 14. The front tapering or V-shaped end of the gusset is joined along one edge only to the" front section by stitching indicated at 16, leaving a free side or flap 18. The gus set is arrangedto join the lower edges of the section together and provide leg openings L as shown.
The flap 18 of the gusset is arranged to overlie a free edge 2 of the front section 2 and co-operating buttons and buttonholes indicated at 11 associated with the free edge 2 and flap 18 are provided for securing the parts in overlapped relation as shown in Fig. 1.
This gusset is so constructed and arranged that it not only connects the front and rear sections of the garment together at a point between the leg openings but serves as a support for certain parts of the body. In order that it may perform the supporting function, according to one featureof the invention the gusset 12 is formed so that it is inclined to distend slightly at its mid-point between the ends thereof'and between'the leg openings as indicated at 20. At least this is desirable rather than have it extend upwardly between the leg openings as in the usual construction.
By providing the tapering or V-shaped end portions of the gusset at the front of the gar ment the flap 18 and underlying edge of the front section 2'provide means of opening the garment or form a slit which extends inwardly and upwardly from the inner side of the limb of the wearer as shown in Fig. 3. In this way the buttons and buttonholes are not subjected to undue strains as a wearer of, the garment bends the body. While as shown in Fig. 4 the gusset isis'haped to support the end portions of the gusset, the said central lower back of the body. flhe gusset if deportion being arranged to distend between sired may be made of one piece or a pair of V- the leg openings.
shaped pieces secured together at their lower side edge.
According to a modification of the invention shown in Fig. 2, I provide in association with gusset ends 12 a central section indicated by 24 which may be of an elastic fabric of some sort. That is, the section 24 may be of some specially knitted or woven fabric which is more or less elastic or resilient as compared with the gusset ends 12 and which will function as a supporting element as previously referred to. This section 24 may be joined at its upper front and rear side edges to the gusset ends 12 by stitching as is indicated at 26 so as to obtain the desired effect or in lieu thereof the entire gusset may be made of some suitable material having elastic characteristics for the supporting and yieldable function.
As will be observed, as one feature I have provided a garment wherein the front and rear sections are joined together between the leg openings thereof by a body supporting element which for its particular function'enhances the practicability of the garment. As another feature it will be noted that I have provided an opening slit at the front of the neck opening of the garment to facilitate ease in stepping into the garment while a slit at the lower side which extends upwardly and inwardly from the inner side of the leg opening facilitates opening of the same.
Various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and therefore I prefer to be limited by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description.
What I claim is:
A step-in underwear garment comprising in combination, front and rear sections of fabric joined together at upper and side marginal edges providing unsecured lower edges and having neck and arm openings at the upper and side edges thereof, the said sections being provided withV-shaped-cutouts having side edges which converge upwardly from points on the lower marginal edges of the sections which are spaced inwardly from the sides thereof, a gusset member-having converging V-shaped ends, the side edges of the rear end and one side edge of the front end of said gusset being secured to the side edges of the cut-outs on said sections leaving a free edge of the gusset for overlying a free edge of the cut-out in the front section, the said gusset joining the sections together to provide leg openings at either side thereof and including end portions and a central portion of fabric which is relatively more elastic than the fabric of the garment having its upper rear and forward edges secured to said In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
