Application filed July 23, 1925. Serial No. 45,493.
This invention relates to improvements in bloomers and more particularly to bloomers of the type now worn rather generally by misses and ladies. f' Y,
' One object of the invention is to provide a crotch piece in a garment of the character described which shall be so constructed and arranged as `to possess many advantages over the crotch piece of such garments as heretofore made, both with regard to wearing qualities and comfort to the wearer.
ln the Decker & Scott PatentNo. 1,277,700 of'September 3, 1918, a crotch piece for bloomers is disclosed made up of two crescent-shaped .sections secured together along their lower curved edges and arranged so that the seam thus formed p rovides a continuation of and a connection between the inner seams andthe leg portions" of the garment. The crotch sections of4 this patent are of warp knitted fabric with the warp threads extending vertically so that elasticity of the piece is in lateral directions. In the first place the crotch piece of this patent, due to its construction, bunches or gathers at the center as the legs of the garment are moved together, producing discomfort to the wearer and wear is concentrated on the adjacent portions of the 'seam due to the rubbing engagement between these portions as the legs are move'd back and forth. Another objection tothis crotch piece of the Decker & Scott patent is the absence of give or elasticity in vertical directions resulting in the belt portion 'of the bloomers being pulled down below the waist line of the wearer whenever a sitting or stooping posture is assumed and especially during participation in athletic exercises, for which bloomers of this character are much worn.
Another object of the present invention therefore resides in the provision of a crotch piece which will overcome these various disadvantages while at the same time affording greater wearing qualities and comfort.
Other objects ofthe invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein one form of the inventionis illustrated.
1n the drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of a garment embodying the present invention;
Referring more in detail to the drawings, l the garment of the present invention is shown as comprising a plurality of front sections 10 and 11 and a plurality of back sections 12 and 13. The outer adjacent edges of the sections 10 and 12 and 11 and 13 are stitched together as at 14 and 15 and the adjacent edges of sectionsv 10 and 11. and 12 and 13 are stitched together as at 16 and 17 respectively in the body portion of the garment and also at 18 and 19 in the leg portions of the garment. The upper edge or waist line Lof the garment is provided with elastic tape or the like as are also the lower edges of the garment forming the leg openings.
The crotch piece, to which the present invention is primarily directed, is designated generally by 'reference character 20 and is made up of two identically formed shieldshaped sections 21i and 2ljsecured together along their upper curve? edges 21 as at 22. The crotch piece thus ormed is combined with the garment as an insert as shown, said piece being stitched or otherwise secured to the sections 10, 11, 12 and 13 of the garment along the'inner curved edges thereof, which extend from the lower ends of seams 16 and 17 previously described to the upper ends of seams 18 and 19 also previously described. The crotch piece is secured in position or combined with the garment in such wise that the seam 22 uniting the shieldshaped sections 21A and 21b extends cen# trally of the garment from front to rear thereof forming in eEect a continuation of and a connection between the seams 16 and 17 in the body portion of the garment. The crotch piece sections 21a and 21" are of warp knitted fabric and these sections are united, and combined in the garment .so that the warp threads of said sections extend in downwardly divergent lateral directions from the seam '22. In this manner the crotch piece -is possessed of pronounced elasticity in vertical directions. In this conjected to the various strains incidental to the' use of the garment.
By forming the crotch piece, as described,'
of two shield-sliaped sections united along their upper curved edges and combining the piece thusl formed in the garment with the seam joining said sections extending centrally 'from front to rear, all tendency towards biinching or gathering of the inaterial in the'crotch when the elegs of the garment are moved together is avoided. ln other words, the legs of the garment may be movedtogether without causing any distortion or abnormal condition at the center of the piece. This is due to the peculiar shape of the sections 2l and 21", the manner in which they are united and their arrange,I
ment or combination in the garment. An#
other advantage resides in the entire elimi\ nation ci seams on the inner leg portions of the garment as the crotch piece is devoid of seams save the one 22 extending 'from front to rear of the garment. Accordingly undue wear such as inner legv seams invariably cause is avoidedi Furthermore, by uniting the sections 2l and' 21 so that the warp threads thereof extend downwardly in divergent lateral directions 'from the seam Q2 when the crotch piece is in position, maximum elasticity in vert-ical directions is obtained, adding greatly to the comfort oit the wearer, for by reason ci?t this feature stooping, sitting or squatting postures may intenso be assumedwithout causing the garment to be pulled down at the waist. i
As shown inthe drawings, the crotch piece is formed of two-ply material, that is, each section, 21 and 21",- is madeof double .thickness,` this being done for reenforcing purposes. It will of course be appreciated, howy c ver, that the crotch piece may be made of single ply and in some instances this may be preferred. lt will be apparent that the improvements arel also susceptible of various other changes and modifications without departing from the spirit ofthe invent-ion and accordingly it is not desired to limit or restrict tlie same except where limitations'appear in the appended claims.
The invention claimed is:
l. ln a bloomer garment, a crotch piece comprised oi two shield shaped sections of warp knitted abricistitched together along their upper curved edgesand combined in the garment with the said stitched edges extending from iront to rear thereof and forming a continuation of the center body seam ot the7 garment, the warpr threads oi said sections extending in downwardly divergent directions from said seam and lying substantially parallel to the inner leg seams.
ot the garment, the greatest elasticity ot" the fabric ot the crotch piece being in a direction transverse to the warp threads.
2. ln a bloonier garment, a crotch insert comprised' ot two shield-shaped sections formed oi3 warp knitted fabric, a seam uniting said sections along their nppercurved edges, the warp threads of said sections normally/ extending in downwardly divergent directions from said seam., the greatest elasticity oit the fabric oi' the crotch insert being in a direction transverse to the warp threads,
ln witness whereof we hereto aix our signatures.
