CHARLES E. CORNELIUS, OE NEW YORK, iN. Y.
TOY MERRY-GO-ROUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,167, dated June 27, 18,82.
Application filed May 11, 1882. v(No model.) Y l A To ali whom tt may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES F. CORNELIUS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Toy Merry-Go-Bound, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
My invention consistsV principally of a toy having one or more platforms bearing images of men and beasts or other fantastic figures or pictures, in combination with mechanism for revolving the platforms.
My invention also consistsin the construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts of the toy, all as hereinafter fully described.
The toy which I prefer will have two platforms with images or pictures, and these platforms will be adapted to be revolved in opposite directions.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming'part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is`an elevation, partly in section, of my new toy merry-go-round having two platforms, the section being taken on the line y y,
of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken on the line x of Fig. l.
A represents the central post, to which the upper and smaller platform, B, is secured. This post A is journaled at the bottom in the base-board C and at the top in the inclined or horizontal arm D, which reaches from the post E, which rises from one side of the base-board C. Secured to the Said post A, near its bott'om end, is the pulley F, around which the band G, coming from the shaft H, passes for revolving the post and platform B.
Attached to the upper surface of the platform B, and near its outer edge, are the images or figures J J,
K isthe lower and larger platform, placed loosely upon the post A. This platform has attached to it the figures LL, which move outside of the gures J J, and this platt'orm K has secured to its under side the pulley-sleeve M, which surrounds the post A, and around which pulley the band N, coming from the crankshaft O, passes for revolving the platform K, and this band is so arranged relatively to the arrangement of the band G that it will cause the platform K to revolve in the opposite direction from that of the platform B.
The shaft H is provided with the pulley P, and the shaft O is provided with the pulley Q, over which pulleys the band R is placed, so that the shaft H Will be revolved when power is applied to the crankS for revolving the shaft 0. The shaft H is journaled at one end in the side f of the base box T and at the other in the short board or block h, secured in the base-box, as shown, while the shaft Oris journaled at one end in the opposite side, f', of the said basel box and at the other end in the board or block o, similar to the board or block h, secured in the saidbase-box T, as shown in Fig. 2.
The crank S is attached to the outer end of the shaft O,outside of the base-box, as shown in said Fig. 2. The shafts H and'O are wound with a strip of rubber, as shown atk lo, to cause the bands G and N to adhere to the shafts and cause the table to revolve with certainty.
In the grooves of the pulleys I and Q are placed the strips of rubber s, as shown clearly in Fig. 1,.for causing the band B to adhere to these pulleys, so that there will be no danger of the band slipping. I
"The base-box T serves to support the parts of the toy and to inclose and hide from view the said shafts, pulley, bands, 8vo., so that the toy will have a complete and finished appearance, and the outer` walls'of' the box may be ornamented, if desired.
At or near the top of the post A is secured the canopy U, which revolves with the post in the same direction that the platform B revolves.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a toy, the base-box T, provided with the upright E, having arm 1 in combination with the post A,platform B, having the images J J, and the platform K, having images L, the platforms B and K being adapted to be revolved in opposite directions, as set forth.
2. In a toy, the image-bearing platform K, having the pulley-sleeve M secured to its under side, in combination with the post A, having the platform B and pulley]` secured to it, the platform K and post A being adapted to be revolved in opposite directions by the shafts IOC H and O and bands G, N, and R, the latter passing over thepulleys P and Q, substantially as described.
3. The base-box T, having the shafts H and 5 O journaled therein, and the post A, journaled at its lower end in the base C of the box and at its upper end in the arm D, supported by the post E, and having the pulley F and platform B secured to it, in combination with the platform K, provided with the pulley-sleeve M, the platform K and post A being adapted 0to be revolved in opposite directions, substantially as described.
4. The platform B and canopy U, secured I 5 upon the post A, in combination with theplat i CHARLES Witnesses H. A. WESL C. SEDGWICK.
