Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 1917.
Application filed December 19, 1916. Serial No. 137,847.
To all whom it may concern:
B it known that I, MiLLin M. DEIBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at "oungstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanical toys, reference to toys in or figures are driven or actuated by a wind wheel. The invention has for its object to produce a toy or device of this class of simple and improved construction including a base member which consists of a box supporting the moving parts, the whole being capable of use as a weather vane or indicator.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of this class which may be knocked down, the parts of the device being accommodated within the box or base, the same being provided with lids or closures which, when the device is in active use, constitute platforms that support some of the moving parts. r
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the general construction and operation of the device.
With thes and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired. i
In the drawings, 1
Figur 1 is a top plan viewshowing the device in condition for use.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 in'Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view showing the device collapsed and folded within the box.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The base member of the device consists of an oblong box B of rectangular shape,
1 The upper extremities said box having a bottom member 15, side members 16 and end members 17. The bottom of the box is provided with slots 18 adj acent to the sides and midway between the ends thereof, and the side members 16 are provided on their inner faces with guide members or keepers 19 alinin g with the slots. C is a yoke, the limbs of which, 20, are providedintermediate their ends with offsets or shoulders 21, the lower relatively narrow portion of the yoke being provided with a cross bar or brace The relatively Widely spaced portions of the limbs of the yoke may be inserted from beneath the bottom of the box through the slots 18 and the keepers 19, as clearly seen in Fig. 3, so that the box will be supported on the shoulders or ofl'sets 21. of the limbs 20 of the yoke afford bearings for a shaft 23 carrying at one end a conventional or propellershaped wind wheel 2i, said shaft carrying also intermediate the bearing members a double pulley 25. The shaft may be retained in its bearings by pins or cotters 26, and in like manner the wind wheel 24 and the pulley 25 may be detachably mounted by means of pins or cotters 27 permitting the parts to be readily knocked down or assembled, as may be required.
Two cover members 28 are provided, the same adapted when knocked down to extend lengthwise of the box or base, and said cover members being of such dimensions that the two together will constitute a lid or cover for the box. Said cover member will also constitute platforms on which jointed or movable figures 29 are permanently supported, said figures having been shown as being equipped with jointed arms 30 that engage wrist pins or cranks 31 that are connected with wheels or disks 32 mounted on shafts 33 that are supported in suitable bearings 34 on the members 28. Each member 28 is provided near one side edge thereof intermediate its nds with apertures for the passage of fastening members consisting of hook bolts 35, two of which are connected with each end member 18 of the box, said bolts being provided with nuts 36 and by means of which the members 28 may be securely mounted onthe ends of the box, transversely of the latter, as clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2. Each shaft 33 also carries a pulley 37 which may be connected by a belt or band 38 with one of the grooves of the double pulley 25 on the main shaft 23.
n ins-.1
The bridge member of the yoke C and the member 22 of said yoke are apertured for the passage of an axial pin 39 connected with a suitable support, such as a post 40, on which the device may be mounted, as best seen in'Figs. 2 and 3. A tail vane 4-1 is provided, the same having at one end a flange 42 adapted to engage a guide cleat 43' on one side of the box opposite to the wind wheel 24.
When the'parts are properly assembled and mounted, the box or base will turn with the wind, and the moving'figures will be driven by the wind wheel. hen the device is not in use the yoke C, the main shaft 23 with its attachments and the tail vane ll may be disassembled and packed within the 'box, as seen in Fig. 4, leaving ample room within the box for the moving figures and the shafts '33 which are permanently connected with the lid members 28, the latter being inverted and placed lengthwise of the box, as seen in Fig. 4. Said lid members are provided near the end edges thereof, about midway between the side members, with apertures 44; adapted for engagement with the bolts 35 from which the nuts have been temporarily removed. By replacing and tightening the nuts the entire device will be folded compactly and secured within thejbox, as clearly seen in Fig. 4, thus making a convenient package for storage or shipment.
The entire device, as will be seen from the foregoing description, is'simple in construction and may be manufactured and marketed at a small expense. Apart from forming auseful and ornamental weather vane, the knock down feature brings out mechanical features of construction and assemblage which will furnish amusement and instruction for the younger generation.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the class described, a box having a bottom and side members, said bottom being provided with slots adjacent to the side members, and said side members being provided with keepers alining with the slots, a yoke having limbs that are offset to produce shoulders, said limbs adapted to engage the slots and keepers and said shoulders adapted to support the bottom of the box, and a pivotal support for said yoke.
2. In a device of the class described, a box having a bottom and side members, said bottom being provided with slots adjacent to the side members, and said side members being provided with keepers alining with the slots, a yoke having limbs that are offset Copies 01' this patent may be obtained for to produce shoulders, said limbs adapted to engage the slots and keepers and said shoulders adapted to support the bottom of the box, and a pivotal support for said yoke, a shaft supported for rotation by the limbs of the yoke above the box, moving figures supported on the box, a wind wheel carried by the shaft, and means for transmitting motion from the wind wheel to the moving figures.

In a device of the class described, a box having a bottom and side members, said bottom being provided with slots adjacent to the side members, and said side members being provided with keepers alining with the slots, a yoke having limbs that are offset to produce shoulders, said limbs adapted to engage the slots and keepers and said shoulders adapted to support the bottom of the box, and a pivotal support for said yoke, a shaft supported for rotation by the limbs of the yoke above the box, moving figures supported on the box, a wind wheel carried by the shaft, and means for transmitting motion from the wind wheel to the moving figures, and a tail vane detachably mounted and supported on one side member of the boX.
4. In a device of the class described, a base consisting of a rectangular box, hook bolts connected with the ends of the box and having nuts, lid members adapted to extend lengthwise of the box and also to be supported transversely of the box across the ends thereof, said lid members carrying movable figures adapted to be accommodated within the box when the lid members are inverted, and means for driving the moving figures; the lid members being provided with apertures adjacent to one side edge and adjacent to the end edges thereof for engagement with the bolts.
5. A device of the class described comprising a box, a supporting yoke detachably connected therewith, a vanedetachably connected with the box, a driving shaft carrying a wind wheel detachably connected with and adapted to be journaled upon the limbs of the yoke, and lid members having moving figures permanently connected there with and adapted to be accommodated within the box when the lid members are inverted, the yoke, the vane, the shaft and the wind wheel being also proportioned to be accommodated within the box, and means for securing the lid members in various positions with relation to the box.
