Description
" [NITED STATES Patented October 20, 1903A.
PATENT OFFICE.
lVlERRYiGO-ROUND SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,802, dated October 20, 1903.
Application filed May 11, 1903. Serial No. 156,700. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern:
citizen of the United States, residing at Wellman, in the county of Washington and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Merry-Go-Round, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide an improved merrygo-round that can be advantageously operated by foot-power applied by a person seated thereon to be carried around in a circle and at the same time to carry others, especially children, as required to afford amusement and healthy exercise.
lMy invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation that shows the relative positions of all the elements and subcombinations as required for practical use. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the adjustable and rotatable carrier and the mechanism for utilizing the foot-power of a person on one end of the carrier as required to ride around in a circle while operating the invention.
The numeral 10 designates a wooden post, preferably square, pivotally connected with a fixed metal step 12, to which is fixed a bevel gear-wheel13- The top of the post has a fixed journal 15 tted in a bearing 16, adapted to be fixed to the ceiling of a building, a port able frame, or any suitable support when used out of doors and in the fresh air as required to get the benefit of invigorating fresh air by the operator and the persons on the carrier. A board 17, adapted to serve as a carrier, has an aperture to admit the passage of the post, and a metal collar 18 is fixed to the post and to theboard, that extends horizontally in reverse ways relative to the post. A second board 19 is adjustably connected with one end of the board 18 by means of a metal sleeve 2O and screws 21, adapted forA detachably clamping the overlying parts rigidly together. A metal collar 22, having a ange 23, provided with perforations, is fixed to the upper end portion of the post, and rods 24, having hooks at their upper ends, are detachably connected with the collar and pivn otally connected with the carrier-board by means of the eyebolts 25, as shown in Fig. l, or in any suitable way as required to rotate the carrier and persons thereon in a horizontal plane on a level with the floor or ground upon which the invention is operated. A rod 26, composed of two parts adjustably connected by a turnbuckle 27, is connected with. the board 19 and the collar` 22, as shown in Fig. 1, or in any suitable Way as required to allow adjustment of theboard 19 relative to the board 17 and post 10. A rotatable shaft 28 is mounted in bearings 29, fixed to the under side ofthe board 17, and has a fixed pinion 30 to engage the gear-wheel 13 and lateral bends 31 and 32 at its outer end, that project in reverse ways to serve as treadles adapted for rotating the shaft by means of footpower applied by a person seated on the end of the board 17. To make room for the tread motion. of the operator seated on the end of the board, a section of the board is cut away and the shaft 28 inclined relative to the board, as shown in Fig. 2.
Itis obvious the size of a machine may vary as desired and that a band-wheel can be xed to the post for transmitting power and motion therefrom to extraneous machinery.
Having thus described the purpose of my invention andthe construction and operation thereof, its practical utilitywill be readily understood by persons familiar with the art to which it pertains; and
` What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A merry-go-round comprising a rotatable post, a fixed step tor supporting the post, a board fixed to the post to extend in a horizontalV plane, a sleeve on the end of the board, a second board adjustably connected with the post and first-named board by means of said sleeve and a set-screw, a gear-Wheel xed to the step, a rotatable shaft having a pinion on one end and lateral bends at its other end projected in reverse ways, bearings fixed to the board to support the shaft and rods fixed to the post and to the boards and a turnbuckle, arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
