Description

PETER VAN ANTWERP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
KEY FOR LOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,923, dated October 25, 1859*.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER VAN ANTwERP, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Keys for Locks; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan showing the key with a hole prepared to receive the ring. F ig. 2 is the key and ring united ready for use.
All persons who carry keys in the pocket have experienced the inconvenience of the great amount of room they occupy on account of the size of the bow or ring at the end of the stem of each key, the only purpose of which is to give the required leverage for turning the key when inserted in the lock.
The object of my invention is to dispense entirely with the usual permanent bow or ring at the end of the stein, and to this end my invent-ion consists in making the end of the key-stein with a hole to receive a ring made as is usually employed to hold together a bunch of keys in such manner that such ring in addition to its usual function of connecting a series of keys shall answer the purpose of a lever for turning each key of the bunch, thus not only reducing the original cost of keys but rendering them much more portable than as heretofore made.
The ring A may be round or oval in form and may be either the ordinary split or snap ring for holding keys or of any other suitable construction. The hole, B, in the end of the key shank or stem, C, should be made as represented or otherwise so formed that the ring A, when opened can be easily inserted and when a key is inserted in a lock admit of using the ring as the lever to turn the key and yet sufficiently loose or free when a series of keys are on the ring they may fold over and pass by each other to occupy t-he least amount of space in the pocket.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting my claim to the specific mode of construction above described as they may be varied at pleasure.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Constructing the stems of keys with a hole near the end instead of the usual permanent bow or ring handle and to be fitted loosely to the usual ring for connecting a series of keys and in such manner substantially as described that said connecting ring shall answer the further purpose of the usual bow or fixed ring for turning the keys when inserted in the lock, as set forth.
