Description

1 U ITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
EDGAR N. MGKIMM, OF LATHROP, MISSOURI.
HARNESS-OIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,188, dated June 6, 1882.
' Application filed April 19,1882. (Speeiznens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR N. MoKIMM, of Lathrop, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Harness-Oihof which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
My improved composition of matter consists of the following ingredients, mixed in the following proportions gum-shellac, two ounces; alcohol, three pints; fish-oil, fourteen and a half pints West Virginia oil, nineteen pints; lamp-black, one pound; spirits of turpentine, one pint; coal-oil, nine pints. The gum-shellac is dissolved in the alcohol and the fish-oil is added; The West Virginia oil, the lampblack, and turpentine are then added, and finally the coal-oil is added, and all the ingredients are thoroughly and carefully mixed.
The gum-shellac gives the leather a fine polish and finish. The alcohol cuts the oils and the shellac and unites them thoroughly. Thefishoil softens the hard leather. The West Virginia oil softens-the leather and prevents the fish-oil from gnmmin g, and also retains the fishoil in the pores of theleather. Thelamp-black 2 5 gives the black color, and thespirits of turpentine dries the other oils. The coal-oil drives the other oils into the leather.
The above'described harness-oil penetrates the leather and passes into the pores of the leather as fast as it is applied, and will not gumon the surface of the leather.
The leather will never break, as the oil keeps it soft and pliant. It makes the leather waterproof and gives it a highly elegant finish and polish.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described composition of matter to be. used as a harness-oil, composed of gumshellac, alcohol, fish-oil, West Virginia oil,
lamp-black, spirits of turpentine, and coal-oil in about the proportions as stated.
EDGAR N. McKlMM.
