SAMUEL SHERWOOD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED BLACKING FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5 1,6 I 6, dated May 8, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SHERWOOD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Water- Proot' Blacking for Harness and other Articles of Leather; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact statement of the component parts of and manner of compounding the same.
Take of beeswax nine (9) pounds; ivory..- black, nine (9) pounds; prussian-blue, one (1) pound; shellac, nine (9) ounces; spirits of turpentine, nineteen (19) pints; alcohol, three (3) pints; oil of lavender, two (2) ounces. Dissolve the shellac in the alcohol. Pulverize the prussian-blue and ivory-black and mix them well together in a dry state. Melt the beeswax by heatin a vessel of suitable capacity. Then add the spirits of turpentine and stir till Well mixed. While this mixture is warm, add and stir in the shellac solution. Put in the ivory-black and prussian-blue and stir again till all are well incorporated. Afterward add the oil of lavender and stir till that also is in corporated with the other ingredients, and the compound or blacking is then fit for the market or for use.
The blacking is used by applying a small quantity to the leather with a stiff brush and then brushing it with a soft brush till a polish is produced.
I do not confine myself strictly to the use of the precise proportions of the several ingredients herein specified, as these may be to some extent varied without materially affecting the character of the compound; but I have stated the proportions'whieh, all things considered, experiment has shown to be adapted to give the best results.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The water-proof blacking composed of the ingredients herein specified, in about the proportions herein set forth.
