The'shaft 20 is provided at'one end thereof W'ith a gear T30 -which isinterposed in a reduction gear train 3| of conventional construction and which is operated by means `of a motor M disposed at the 4rear ofthe .base frame I5. The rollers 28 are adapted to be adjusted relative to each other Aby means of a pair 'of plates 32 which Vare disposed on the upper side of a polygonal bar 33 extending across the sides/of the frame l5. Each -plate 32 Ais formed Witha U-shaped slot -34 'confronting a roller 2B so that a portion of the roller '28 may engage 'in the slot 34. These plates 32 not only provide for holding the rollers 28 in adjustedposition relative 'to each other, but also provide a means for regulating the amount of `glue which is retained on the periphery of each roller vfor application tothe article passing thereover.
The bar 33 is formed with an inverted T-shaped slot ,-35 vextending lengthwise thereof, and `aright angul-arly disposed and upwardly opening slot 36 is formed in the vbar 33 so that the head 3l of a bolt 33 may be inserted or removed from the T- shaped slot 35. A Wing nut 39 is threaded on the bolt 33 and is adapted to tightly hold the plate 32 -in lengthwise adjusted position with respect tothe bar 33. The opposite ends of the bar ,'33 engage in an upwardly opening notch 40 `which is 'formedin each side member I 6, with thefnotch 4,0 1substantially 'longer than 'the 'width ofthe 'bar 3 33 so that the latter may be adjusted lengthwise of the notch 40 and the inner edge 4I of the slot 34 may be adjusted toward or from the roller 28.
A pair of elongated bar adjusting rods 42 are secured at their forward ends to the projecting ends of the bar 33 and engage through a notch 43 which is formed in an outwardly offset lug or enlargement 44 carried by each side member I6. A locking pin 45 is extended through the enlargement 44 engaging over the rod 42 and as shown in Figure 4, the rod 42 is formed with an elongated cut-out 46 within which the locking pin 45 is adapted to loosely engage. The rod 42 extends rearwardly, engaging through a notch 41 formed in the rear lug 48 projecting from the base l5, and a pair of rod adjusting nuts 49 and 50 are threaded on the rear portion of the rod 42.
A spring l engages about the rod 42, bearing at its forward end against a collar 52 which is fixed on the rod 42 and bearing at its rear end against a washer 53 positioned about the rod 4 2 and interposed between the rear end of spring 5l and the forward side of lug 48.
The bar 33 adjacent each end thereof has secured thereto a pair of angle members 54 which are adapted to bear against the inner faces of the side members I6 so that the bar 33 will be held against lateral shifting, but Will be permitted to have longitudinal shifting or adjustment within the notches 40.
The base I5 has mounted above the well 2| an elongated work feeding table 55 which is secured to a pair of elongated bars or -arms 56 pivoted, as at 51, to the forward portion of the base I5. The bars 56 include upstanding lugs 58 between which a pair of pressure rollers 59 and 60 are rotatably mounted. The pressure rollers -59 and 60 are disposed above the gluing rollers 28 on opposite sides of the longitudinal axes of the rollers 28, as shown in Figure 3. The articles which are being fed to the gluing rollers 28 are guided over the table 55 by means of a pair of elongated angleshaped guide members 6I which are disposed on the upper side of the table 55.
Each angle member 6I has secured thereto a laterally projecting bar 62 formed with an elongated slot 63 through which a bolt 64 engages. The bolt 64 extends through the table 55 and a wing nut 65 is threaded onto the bolt 64. After the work has passed over the gluing rollers 28, the work is stripped from the gluing rollers by means of pairs of stripping fingers 68 which are pivotally mounted on an elongated bar 61 disposed between the side members i6 adjacent the forward portions of the latter.
Referring now to Figures 9 and 10, there is disclosed a slightly modified form of this invention. The gluing roller 28a is slidingly mounted on the shaft 20a formed with a keyway 26a, and a screw 68 is threaded through the hub 69 of roller 28a and projects into the keyway 26a. Each roller 28a is adjusted lengthwise of the shaft 20a' by means of a plate 32a formed with a U-shaped slot 34a, and the plate 32a slidingly engages on the upper side of a supporting bar 33a. The bar 33a is formed in the rear side thereof with a T- shaped slot 35a and the plate 32a is provided with a right angular ange 'IG engaging the rear slotted side of bar 33a.
The head 'Il of a bolt 'i2 engages in the slot 35a and a nut 13 is threaded on the bolt l2 and is adapted to secure the plate 32d in adjusted position along the length of the bar 33a.
In the use and operation of this machine, the article guide members 6I are adjusted relative to each other so that the articles may freely slide lengthwise thereof over the table 55. The gluing rollers 28 are adjusted relative to each other so that the rollers will Contact with the article at predetermined points on the lower surface of the article. As the article passes over the gluing rollers and beneath the pressure or feeding rollers 59 and 68, the article Will have glue applied in a pair of strips, and the article after passing over the gluing rollers 28 will be stripped therefrom by the stripping fingers 6B.
In Figure 11 there is disclosed another modification of this invention wherein the Ishaft 20h is formed with a flat surface 15 extending lengthwise thereof, and a brass plug 16 loosely engaging in a threaded hole 15 formed in hub 69h of glue roller 28D is held tight against shaft 2Gb by means of a set screw 18.
It will, of course, be understood that there may be as many of these gluing rollers as may be desired and where only a single narrow strip is to be glued, only one of these rollers will be used and this roller adjusted to contact with the article at a predetermined point on the article.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. A gluing machine comprising a base formed with a glue well, a table engaging over said well, a shaft rotatably carried by said base and extending across said well, said shaft having a longitudinal key engaging surface, a gluing roller slidably carried by said shaft, having a key means engaging said surface for simultaneous rotation with sliding movement of said roller on the shaft, a Vpair of feeding rollers disposed over said gluing roller, and means offset from said gluing roller and engageable therewith for adjusting said gluing roller lengthwise of said shaft, said adjusting means including means for regulating the depth of glue retained on said gluing roller for application to an article passing over the latter.
2. A gluing machine comprising a base formed with a glue well, a table engaging over said well. a shaft rotatably carried by said base and extending across said well, said shaft having a longitudinal key engaging surface, a gluing roller slidably carried by said shaft and having a key means engageable with said surface for simultaneous rotation with sliding movement of said roller on said shaft, and means offset from said gluing roller for adjusting said gluing roller lengthwise of said shaft, said adjusting means including a yoke-shaped member engaging the opposite ends of said gluing roller, and horizontally movable supporting means for said member, said supporting means comprising an elongated bar formed with an inverted T-shaped slot lengthwise thereof, a headed bolt having the head thereof slidable in said slot, and a nut threaded on said bolt for clamping said yoke-shaped mem- 'ber in adjusted position lengthwise of said bar.
3. A gluing machine comprising a base formed with a glue well, a table engaging over said well. a shaft rotatably carried by said base and extending across said well, said shaft having a longitudinal key engaging surface, a gluing roller slidably carried by said shaft and having a key means engageable with said surface for simultaneous rotation with sliding movement of said roller on said shaft, a pair of feeding rollers disposed over said gluing roller, and means offset with a glue well, a table engaging over said well,
a shaft rotatably carried by said base and extending across said well, a full longitudinal keyway in said shaft, a gluing roller slidably carried by said shaft and key means engaging in said keyway carried by said roller for simultaneous rotation thereof with said shaft, a :pair of feeding rollers disposed over and beyond each end of said gluing roller, and means offset from said gluing roller for adjusting said gluing roller lengthwise of said shaft, said adjusting means including a plate formed with a notch within which said gluing roller is adapted to loosely engage, a supporting bar for said plate extending oversaid base in parallel relation with respect to said shaft, means for clamping said plate in adjusted position along the length of said bar and means for adjusting said bar toward or from said shaft.
5. A gluing machine comprising a base formed With a glue well, a table engaging over said Well, a shaft rotatably carried by said base and extending across said well, a full longitudinal keyway in said shaft, a gluing roller slidably carried by said shaft, a key carried by said roller engaging in said keyway for simultaneous rotation of said roller with said shaft, a pair of feeding rollers disposed over and extending beyond the ends of said gluing roller, and means adjusting said gluing roller lengthwise of said shaft throughout the length of said feeding rollers, said adjusting means including a plate formed with a notch Within which said gluing roller is adapted to loosely engage, a supporting bar for said plate extending over said base in parallel relation with respect to said shaft, means for adjusting said bar toward or from said gluing roller, and means for clamping said plate in adjusted position along the length of said bar.
