JOHN McKIBBIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MACHINE FOR APPLYING PASTE TO CARDBOARD, &c.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
Application filed April 2, 1909. Serial No. 487,545.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MGKIBBIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Applying Paste to Cardboard, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine of novel construction for applying paste or other adhesive material in parallel strips to card board or similar articles.
The machine is particularly intended for applying the paste to the middlings used in the manufacture of iiexible book covers.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a plan of my improved machine; Fig. 2 a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3 a cross section on line 3 3, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a similar section on line 4 4, Fig. 2; Fig. 5 a plan of the paste font with the cover removed; Fig. 6 a similar plan with the cover in position; Fig. 7 a section through the cover on line 7 7, Fig. 6; Fig. 8 a similar section on line 8 8, Fig. 6, and Fig. 9 a face view of a duplex middling, showing the strips of paste applied thereto by the machine.
The middling is that portion of a flexible book cover which is pasted to the inner side of the leather or other facing in order to reinforce the same. To connect the parts, the facing or cover proper overlaps the outer edge of the middling, while the inner edges of the latter are secured to the cover by paste strips. As illustrated in Fig. 9, the two halves 10 of the middling may be made integral with an intervening section 11 separable therefrom along weakened lines 12.
The object of the machine is to apply a paste strip 13 to each of the halves 10 slightly beyond line 12.
Upon a base plate 14 is centered a paste font 15, by means of pins 16. Within bearings 17 of font 15 is journaled a shaft 18 carrying adjustable paste rollers 19. These rollers are straddled by strippers 20 adjustably secured to a slotted plate 21 by screws 22 carrying nuts 23. Font 15 is provided with a cover 24 having a central opening 25 through which rollers 19 slightly protrude. At the front, cover 24 has a downwardly curved liange 26 that constitutes a guide for the material to be pasted, while back of opening 25 the cover is recessed as at 27, (Fig. 8), to obtain a clearance for the'paste strips. Font 15 is flanked by the top plates 28 of a table supported upon base 14 by standards 29 and posts 30, said plates being flush with cover 24. At a slight elevation above plates 28, extends a rear rail 31 that also passes over cover 24, and is secured at its ends to spacing blocks 32 mounted on plates 28. At each side of font 15 there projects forwardly from rail 31 an arm 33 provided with a bearing 34 adapted for the accommodation of a shaft 35,. This shaft is vertically alined with shaft 18 and carries a pair of adjustable pressure rollers 36 which are grooved to accommodate the upper portions of rollers 19. Over each plate 28 there also extends a frontrail 37 which, however, does not pass over cover 24. Rails 37 are encompassed by slides 38 that may be held in position by clamp screws 39 and carry gages 40. These gages are located above plates 28 and below rails 31, 37. Outwardly Haring ends 41 of gages 40 extend over curved guide plates 42 secured to plates 28 Hush with curved flange 26 of cover 24.
In use, the gages are set to the width of the middling or other card board to be pasted and rollers 19, 36 are adjusted to correspond to the spacing desired for paste strips 13. The middling is then fed by hand over cover 24 and between rollers 19, 36, so that it receives the two parallel strips of paste 13. After receiving such strips, the card board is passed out of the machine below rail 31 and above the recessed section 27 of cover 24, in proper condition to be secured to the leather or other cover of the book.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a paste font, a pair of paste rollers journaled therein, a cover for the font having an opening that accommodates said rollers, a pair of top plates flanking the font flush withsaid cover, a rear rail extending over the top plates, forwardly projecting arms secured to the rear rail, a shaft journaled in said arms, grooved rollers mounted on said shaft, a pair of front rails i extending over the top plates, and gages adjustably mounted on said front rails.
2. A device of the character described comprising a paste font, a pair of rollers flush with said cover, a rail extending over the top plates, a pair of arms secured to the rail, a shaft journaled in said arms, and grooved pressure rollers mounted on said shaft.
3. A device of the character described comprising a paste font, a pair of paste rollers journaled therein, a cover for the font having an opening that accommodates said rollers, a pair of top plates flanking the font flush with said cover, a rail extending over the top plates, forwardly projecting` arms se cured to the rail, a shaft journaled in said arms, grooved pressure rollers mounted on said shaft, a pair of rails disposed in front of the aforesaid rail, and gages suspended from said pair of rails and adjustable longi tudinally thereof toward and awayfrom the font.
4. A device of the character described comprising a paste font, a pair of paste rollers journaled therein, a cover having an opening that accommodates said rollers, a pair of top plates, a rail extending over the top plates, arms secured to said rail, a shaft journaled in said arms, grooved rollers mounted on said shaft for coperation with the paste rollers, a pair of front rails also extending over the top plates, the cover having a recess beneath the first mentioned rail,
and gages slidably mounted upon said pair of front rails and extending beneath the first mentioned rail and said pair of rails and adjustable longitudinally of the pair of rails toward and away from said cover.
5. In a device of the character described, a base, pins in the base, a font positioned between said pins, a pair of paste rollers journaled in the font, a cover for the font having an opening that accommodates said rollers, a rear rail, arms secured to the rail, a shaft journaled in said arms, pressure rollers mounted on said shaft for coperation with the paste rollers, a pair of front rails, and gages adjustably mounted on said front rails.
6. A device of the character described comprising a table, a paste font, a shaft journaled therein, a pair of paste rollers mounted on said shaft, a second shaft supported by the table above the irst shaft, a pair of pressure rollers mounted on said second shaft, rails extending at a distance above the table, and gages suspended from said rails and adjustable longitudinally of the latter toward and away from the table.
Signed by me at New York city (Manhattan,) N. Y., this lst day of April, 1909.
JOHN MCKIBBIN.
