and a resident-of Milford, in the county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Applying Bindings to Sheets of Material, of which the following is a specification.
In the manufacture of paper boxes and similar articles, it is often desirable to apply a binding of cloth or other material on one or more of the edges of a sheet of material, such, for instance, as cardboard or strawboard. H
To provide a means for doing this which will be automatic in its action is the object of the present invention and it consists of an apparatus comprising a -suitable supporting table on which are adjustably mounted the various instrumentalities which are capable of feeding the sheet of material and simultaneously feeding thereto a strip of binding tape to which has been applied a tacky substance and then shaping the strip of binding I material about the edge of the sheet of material and applying pressure thereto to cause. it to contact with and adhere to said strip of material.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrange ment of parts which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.

In the drawings, 10 represents a suitable table on which at one end is mounted a framework 11. On the framework 11 is revolubly mounted the shaft or drum 12 supporting a reel 13 of binding tape which passes over a roller14 revoluble in a tank 15 containing glue or any similar tacky substance, a portion of which is carried by the periphery ofsaid drum 14 and transferred to the under side of the strip of bindingmater'ial as it passes over said drum from the reel 13. This strip of binding material 13* passes over a plurality of rollers 16 revo- ,lubly mounted in the framework 11,- the upper pair of rollers 16 being "so mounted that they may be adjusted to different heights therein; Projecting upwardly from the table 10 are three back stops 17, 17 and 17", the front faces of which are in alinement with each other. These back stops 17, 17, and 17 may be formed a part of the table or secured thereto. Each back stop is proby which a grooved supporting member 19 may be adjusted transversely of said back stop and secured in adjusted position by means-of the clamping members 20. When sheet of material, as, for instance, the card'- board 21, said board is inserted in the groove 22 in said strip 19 and is fed longitudinally thereof between the rollers 23-24. Threaded shanks 32 of the arms 30 extend through a plate 33 which may be adjustable toward and from the support 31 by means of the adjusting screws 34 while between said plate 33 and the enlarged ends of the arms 30 are interposed springs 35, the tension of which may be regulated by said adjusting screws 34 to maintain any desired tension upon the cardboard being fed between said rolls 23 and 24.
On each side of one of the back stops 17 .and parallel therewith are the supporting rods 3637. Adjustably secured to the rod 36 is the block 38 carrying the curved arm 39, the outer end of which has 'adjustably secured thereto a block 40 in which is mounted an arm 41 extending transversely of the table 10 above the back stop 17 and to which is secured the guide 42, the front end of which has upwardly extending lips' 43 to receive the binding strip 13* which passes through an opening 44 in said guide 42 and rests upon the guard 45 secured to the back stop 17.
To one of the supports 31 is pivotally secured a spring rod 46 held in position therein by means of the set screw 47. This spring rod 46 has adjustably secured thereto a collar 48 provided with an arm 49 extending transversely of the table 10 to which is adjustably secured the shaper 50, one end 51 of which has across section such as is indicated in Fig. 11, and the other end 52 of which has the cross section indicated in 'Fig. 12. It is obvious therefore that before reaching the shaper and after passing through the opening 44 in the guide 42 the strip of binding material 13* is perfectly fiat and at right anglesto the sheet of material 21, as indicated in Fig. 14. As soon, however, as the strip of binding material 13* reaches the shaper 50 and enters the same it is bent into the position shown in Fig. 15 and bears the relation to the sheet of material 21 as is indicated in said figure. As the strip passes from the shaper 50' it has assumed the shape and the relation to the strip of material 21 as is indicated in 16. The outer free end of the spring rod 46 has secured thereto the edge presser 53 which is more clearly shown in Fig. 6. The downwardly. projecting plate of said edge presser member 53 is bifurcated and. is adapted to straddle the strip of binding material andthe cardboard to which said strip is being applied. The spring 54 interposed between the end of the spring rod 46 and one of the clamping devices 20 tends to so act upon the presser member as to hold the center portion of the strip of material in.
firm contact with the edge of the cardboard 21, thereby allowing the tacky substance on the under side of said strip of material to adhere to the edge of said cardboard. When in this position the strip of binding material assumes the shape and relation to the cardboard 21 as shown in Fig. 17. As the cardboard 21 with the strip of binding material adhering thereto is fed along by means of the plurality of rollers 23-24, it is fed between the disks 55 and 56 upon the shaft 57 revolubly mounted in hearings in the blocks 58 upon the upper ends of the supporting rods 36-37, said blocks 58 being held downwardly thereon against suitable shoulders by means of the springs 59 surrounding the reduced ends of said rods 36 and 37 and interposed between said blocks and the adjusting nuts 60. The disk 56 is pressed toward the disk 55 by means of a spring 61 surrounding the shaft 57, the tension of the spring 61 being regulated by the nut 62 threaded thereto. The action of these disks 55 and 56 as they revolve in contact with the binding strip 13* is to force the sides of the strip into contact with the walls of the cardboard and permit the tacky substance on said strip to adhere thereto.
On. either side of the back stop 17 are the rods 63 and 64 carrying fiat spring members 65 connected together by means of a spring clip 66 which forces these members 65 into contact with the binding strip and causes said strip to be smoothed and ironed as it is fed between them. At the time the cardboard 21 and the strip of binding material 13* passes from the revoluble disks 55 and 56 and from between the spring plates 65, said binding material and cardboard assume the shape and relation to each other as is indicated in Fig. 18 of the drawings.
The rod 37 and a similar rod 67 on the front side of the back stop 17 have mounted thereon flat springs 68 which retain the cardboard 21 in contact with said back stop as it is fed between the rollers 23 and 24, while interposed between said spring members 68 is a roller 69 mounted in a support 70 secured to the table 10 and adjustable thereon toward and from said back stop 17. As the cardboards with the binding thereon are fed from the machine the operator severs the binding at 71. I
This makes a very convenient form of apparatus for applying strips of binding material to cardboard and similar sheets of material, dispensing entirely with the necessity of handling the tacky strip of binding material, the only work for the operator to perform being to place the sheet of cardboard into the groove 22 upon the guide 19 and move said sheets of'cardboard along said groove until seized by the first pair of rollers 23-24, when the operation of applying the binding to the edge of said cardboard will be automatically completed. In addition to placing the cardboards in this groove and moving them along, as heretofore described, the only additional work for the operator to perform will be the severing of the binding at the point 71 when the operation of applying the strip to the cardboard has been completed.
It is believed that from the foregoing the operation of the apparatus and the many advantages of a device of this kind will be fully apparent without any further description.
It is obvious that the details of construction may be varied without altering the principles of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim;
1. In a-device of the class described, the combination of a mechanism for feeding a sheet of material; means for supplying an adhesive to a bindin strip; devices for shaping said binding str1p over the edge of said sheet; and spring-controlled presser disks the side faces of which are adapted to act upon said strip to retain it in contact with said sheet of material while being fed.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of mechanism for feeding a sheet of material; means for supplying an adhesive to a binding strip; devices for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; a presser member to force said binding strip into contact with the edge of said sheet; and spring-controlled disks the side faces of which are adapted to act upon said binding strip to force it into contact with the side walls of said sheet of material.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of mechanism for feeding a sheet of material; means for supplying an adhesive to a binding strip; devices for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; a pivoted presser member to force said binding strip into contact with the edge of said sheet; and revoluble presser members the side faces of which are adapted to force said binding strip into contact with the side walls of said sheet of material.
4. In a device of the class described, the
combination of mechanism for feeding a sheet of material; means for supplying an adhesive to a binding strip; devlces for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; a pivoted presser member to force said binding strip into contact with the edge of said sheet; and spring-pressed revoluble disks on opposite sides of said sheet the side faces of which are adapted to contact with and force said binding strip into contact with the side walls thereof.
5. In a device of the classdescribed, the combination ofmechanism forfeeding a sheet of material; means for supplying an adhesive to a binding strip; devices for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; a pivoted presser member to force said binding strip into contact with: the edge of said sheet; spring-pressed revoluble disks on opposite sides of said sheetto force said binding strip into contact with the side Walls thereof; a pivoted member on each side of said sheet adapted to bear upon said binding strip; and yielding means interposed between the free ends of said pivoted members.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a mechanism for feeding a sheet-of material; means for supplying an adhesive to a binding strip; devices for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; a notched presser member to force said binding strip into contact with the edge of said sheet; a spring for normally retaining said edge presser member in. con tact with said binding strip; and revoluble presser members the side faces of which are adapted to force said binding strip into contact with the side walls of said sheet of material. v
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of mechanism for feeding a sheet of material; means for applying an adhesive to a binding strip; a supporting member provided with two lateral arms; a
plate provided with a V-notch on one of said arms, for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; a device on the other arm for forcing an intermedlate portion of said strip against the edge'of said sheet; and
sidepresser members in advance bf said edge presser.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of mechanism for feeding a sheet of material; means for applyingan adhesive to a binding strip; a supporting member provided with two lateral arms; a device on one of said arms for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; a device on the other arm for forcing an intermediate portion of said strip against the edge of said sheet; side presser members in advance of said edge presser; and fiat-faced smoothing membersin advance of said side presser members.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination of mechanism for feeding a sheet of material; means for applyingan adhesive to a binding strip; a supporting member provided with two lateral arms; 'a device on one of said arms for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; a device on the other arm for forcing an intermediate portion of said strip against the edgeof said sheet; side presser members in each opening adapted to feed a strip of ma-.
terial lengthwise of said back rest; yielding means for forcing one of each pair of feed rolls toward the other; and means for applying a binding strip to said sheet of mate rial during the feeding thereof.
12. In a device of the class described, the combination of mechanism for feeding a sheet of material; means for applying an adhesive to a bindingstrip; a supporting ,member provided with two lateral arms; a
device on one of said arms for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; a notched device on the other arm for forcing an intermediate portion of said strip against the edge of said sheet;-side presser members in advance of said edge presser; and means for varying the distance between said side presser members and said sheet feeding mechanism.
13. In a device of the class described, the combination of mechanism for feeding a sheet of material; means for applying an adhesive to a binding strip; a supporting member provided with two lateral arms; a device on one of said arms for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; a notched device adjustably secured on the other arm for forcing an intermediate portion of said strip against the edge of said sheet; side presser members in advance of said edge presser; and means for varying the distance between said side presser members and said sheet feeding mechanism.
14. In a device of the class described, the
. combination of mechanism for feeding a 'member provided with two lateral arms; a
device on one of said arms for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; a device on the other arm for forcing an intermediate portion of said strip against the edge of said sheet; side presser members in advance of said edge presser; and yielding flat-faced soothing members in advance of said side presser members normally retained in contact with said binding strip.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a mechanism for feeding a sheet of material; means for supplying an adhesive to a binding strip; devices for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; and revoluble disks between the faces of which said strip is adapted to be retained in contact with said sheet of material while beingfed.
17 In a device of the class described, the combination of a grooved supportiln member; a pair of feed rolls the axes of which are parallel to the side walls of the groove in said member adapted to contact with a strip of material to feed it lengthwise of said grooved supporting member; yielding meansfor forcing one of said rolls toward. the other; and means for applying a binding strip to said sheet of material during the feeding thereof.

In a device of the class described, the combination of mechanism for feeding a sheet of material; means for applying an adhesive to a binding strip; a supporting member extending lengthwise of the machine and provided with two lateral arms; means for adjusting one of said arms rela tive to the other; a device on one of said arms for shaping said binding strip over the edge of said sheet; and a device on the other arm for forcing an intermediate portion of said strip against the edge of the sheet.
