UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH R.. TORREY, OF `WOROES'IEE, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOUBLE RAZOR-STROP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,959, dated June 6, 1882.
Application nieu March 1s,1es2. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern y Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. TOREEY, of the city and county of Worcester, and Oommonwealth .of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double Razor-Strops; and I do hereby declare,
that the following is a full, clear, andexact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a top or plan view of my aforesaid improved razor-strop. Fig. 2 represents a side or edge view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a central vertical longitudinal section through said strop, with the handle broken od, taken on line a b, Fig. 1; and Fig. et represents upon anfenlarged scale a transverse or cross section through the strop, taken on line a b', Fig. 1.
My invention consists in the combination of a hollow c ase or pocket having soft cushioned stropping-surfaces upon-one or more sides of the same, with au ordinary strop, which may be inserted and contained within said cush-A ioned case, as will'be hereinafter more fully explained. K
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings, A represents a hollow casing having cushioned parts BB upon the two at sides of the same. Said casing A is made rectangular in shape in this instance, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and is constructed upon the inside of thick pasteboard or similar stift' material, O. The outside is covered with leather vor other material, D, suitable to strop or sharpen a razor upon, and between said matcrialD and the inner stift' part, O, is contained, within another thinner casing, E, thick felting, wool, cotton-batting, or other suitable elastic padding material, E', for producing soft stroppingcushions upon two sides of the strop, as before described. In this instance two grades of leather are employed for the outside of casing A, said sections of leather being lapped at each side one over the other, asis repre.- sented at c c, Fig. 4, of the drawings, thus pro-V ducing two grades of stropping-surfaces upon which to sharpen a razor. The other part of the strop, which is inserted in casing A, as shown in the drawings, consists in this instance ot' a tlat strip ot' wood, F, which is et sulicient length to form the handle F', and the part FZinsei-ted into the casing A in one piece. Upon the two dat sides of said strip F are fastened strips of leather, G G, or hard honing material, of such grades for honing or sharpening a razor as desired.
Any ordinary means for fastening and tinishing the end H of the strop may be employed, and, if desired, a receptacle for containing the usual dressing used upon a strop may be combined with my improved strop in theordinary manner.
If preferred, my said improved strop may be made squareor ofany other suitable form, and cushioned surfaces combined with only one or all ot' the outer sides of casing, A, and theinner part of the strop, F, may be provided with either hard or elastic stropping-surfaces, as desired, without departing from the principle of my invention.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that a very neat, compact, and practical razor-strop may be produced, having not only the ordinary grades of stropping-surfaces within a very compact form, but which may be provided with additional stropping-surfaces without making the strop any larger than the ordinary' square four-sided strop in common use. I am aware that it is not new to make a Vrazor-strop in two parts, with one of said parts contained within the other, and therefore make no claim thereto in a broad sense.
What Ido claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a cushioned casing or pocket, A, having one or more cushioned stropping parts, B, upon the same, with removable stroppin g part F, provided with suitable stropping-surfaces, and contained within said cushioned casing A, substantially as shown and described.
