SGOT'1,acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Logan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases for Transporting and Exhibiting Samples; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of cases which are provided with removable and hinged sections or compartments, whereby they are adapted to separately contain and separately and partially or wholly exhibit the contents thereof and it consists in certain features hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claims.

Figure l is a perspective of a closed case embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a like view of the same open, and Fig. 3 is vertical transverse section.

Like letters refer to like parts in both figures.

A and B represent the lower portion of the case at its sides and ends, respectively, each of which is surmounted by an upper section, a a b b, respectively hinged to the sections A B. The end sections are substantially of even depth, while the front side upper section a is substantially one-fourth the depth of its contiguous section and the rear section a is substantially one-eighth the depth of its contiguous section.

The cover 0 is divided centrally and longitndinally, and is strengthened by cleats c c, in which are the coacting elements of a locking device, 0, and to which are pivotally attached the handles 0 0 At each end of the case are hinged bindingstraps D, grooved at d for the reception of the cleats c c, and having attached thereto the endretaining bands (1, which may be rigidly attached, as shown in Fig. 1, or pivotally attached, as shown in Fig. 2, in order that they may be reversed to clasp the end of the case,

and thus enable the grooved top bar to pass beneath the bottom and supportthe same when the case is opened.

Each of the hinged sections is provided with and has attached thereto a compartment, and each compartment is provided with a cover, as clearly shown in Fig.2. By hinging the back upper section higher than the front upper section I am enabled to open the latter without disturbing the former, as each moves in a different circle and about difierentcenters. In the front upper section, which I shall denominate No. 1, the lid opens outwardly and is provided with a locking device, as may be each compartment, if desired. The rear upper section carries compartments 2 and opens out wardly, as do the end compartments, 3 4. All of the sections thus far described are inverted when closed within the case, and each is provided with a locking device.

Within the bottom of the case is a removable tray, 5, also provided with a lid. If preferred, this tray may be supported on cleats, thus forming an additional compartment in the bottom of the case, to exhibit the contents of which the tray could be bodily removed; and, if preferred, the tray could be dispensed with and the lid thereof be attached to a cleat secured on the inner sides of the case, and thus a compartment be formed 5 but I prefer the construction shown and above described-that is, a removable tray.

It will be noticed that any one sample may be exhibited without exposing any other contained in the case-a matter of some consequence in the transaction of mercantile business. Furthermore, each compartment fully protects the sample contained in it from admixture with that in another, which in the case of teas, sugars, and other articles of different grades is an advantage.

Having described my invention,what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. As an article of manufacture, a case for transporting and exhibiting samples the sides and ends of which consist of hinged sections carrying compartments adapted to be turned outward, the upper rear and front sections being hinged on lines at different distances from thetop of the case,whereby-one of said sections may be opened without changing the position ICO of the other, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a case for transporting and exhibiting samples,theeombination ofthesectional hinged 5 jointed sides and ends and the binding-strap D, pivoted to the lower of said side sections, and provided with the bands at, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination of thecentrally-divided 10 cover 0, cleats c 0, and strap D, grooved at (I,

substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination of the tray 5, the outwardly-swinging end compartments, 3 4, and the outwardly-swinging side compartments, 1

5. The combination of the compartments 1, 2, 3, and 4, each provided with a cover and means for locking the same, and each adapted to be folded in the manner described by closing the hinged section to which each is at- 20 tached, substantially as shown and described.
