This invention relates to new and useful int-- provements in awnings and" the primary-object of-th'e present in'vention' is to -providean awmn'g:
so designed as to protect a window against rain, snow or the likeand to prevent 'rain' from contactingand-rusting window'screens- A'notherimportant'object of the present invention-isto provide arigidprotective-awning for windows includingnovel and improved light admitti'rig openings that are so arranged and shielded-asto prevent rain, snow or'the like from and' attractive in appearance, relatively inex-- and otherwise wellpensive to manufacture; adaptedfor-the -purposes'for which the same is intended:
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the present awning applied to an outside wall adjacent a window structure;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the present awning structure;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View taken substantially on the plane of section line 4--4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a group perspective view of the frame used in conjunction with the present invention; and,
Figure 6 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line E6 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral It! represents the supporting frame of the present invention generally, comprising a pair of spaced parallel substantially L-shaped side members having vertical leg portions I2 and horizontal leg portions l4. The vertical leg portions I2 are provided with a plurality of'apertures l6 that facilitates the removable securing of said leg portions by suitable fasteners to the side board's l8 of 'a window opening or casing.
Rigidlysecured to the outer free ends 20' of the lower or horizontal leg portions l4, are the' angulated or downwardly turned lower terminals 22' of a pair of forwardly and downwardly inclined support arms 24; the upper terminals 26 of which are fixedly secured to-the upper terminals 28*of the vertical leg portions l2.
Connectingthe outer ends -2ll' of the horizontal leg portions it, is a rigid cross member or bar'30- thatreta'ihs the leg portions I2'and" I4" ofthe side members spaced'relative to each other, and the inclined support arms'24 substantially parallel and coplanar.
The numeral 36 represents generally a pair of stepped side panels, comprising a plurality of adjacent, spaced,- outwardlyand downwardly inclined integral slats 38 that are preferably formed from a single sheet of bendable metal and which" are spaced parallel to I each other with their outer edges 4ilbeing coplanar, and their inner edges 42 also being coplanar and spaced parallel to the outer edges ltl. 'The'in'ner edges 42 and outer edges of the adjacent slats 38 are connected by downwardly and inwardly inclined spacer strips 44 that are integrally formed with the said slats. The spacer strips 44 are provided with longitudinally spaced, inwardly struck tongues or guards 46 that form shields for the light admitting openings 48 in the strips. The lower strips 50 carried by the lower of the slats, referred to by the numeral 52, are provided with integral attaching slats 54 which are rigidly secured to the horizontal legs I4, and the side panels are further secured by rivets or the like 56 to the vertical leg portions l2. In such a secured position, the outer edges 40 and the inner edges 42 terminate in planes that are spaced parallel to the leg portion l2, the horizontal leg portions l4, and the support arms 24.
The numeral 58 represents generally the forward panel of the present awning structure comprising a plurality of adjacent, spaced parallel integral slats 60 which are formed or crimped from a single sheet of bendable metal. The adjacent inner and outer edges 82 and 64 of the slats 66 are connected by inclined spacer strips 66 having longitudinally spaced, inwardly struck guard tongues or shields 68 to provide light ad mitting openings 70. These slats 60 are secured by rivets or the like 12 to the inclined support arms 24. Projecting outwardly from the lower and support arms 24 respectively, andthat the strips 66 are spaced parallel to each other and to the vertical leg portions l2, so that the same will be shielded by the slats 60. The guards or shields 46 and 48 are bendable at a selected angle to prevent rain, snow or the like from entering the openings 48 and to contact the window panes or screens protected by the present awning.
The side edges 80 of the slats 60 are coplanar with and are suitably secured to the inclined, adjacent side edges 82 of the slats 52, also, the side edges 84 of the strips 66 are coplanar with and are suitably secured to the inclined adjacent, side edges 86 of the strips 44.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An awning comprising a supporting frame, a pair of spaced side panels fixedly carried by said frame, a forward panel fixedly carried by said frame, each of said panels having a plurality of horizontally extending, parallel outwardly and downwardly inclined slats, substantially upright strips connecting adjacent horizontal edges of said slats and light admitting openings in said strips, said forward panel having its slats disposed in vertically spaced relation and its strips being disposed in parallel substantially upright planes, said strips having integral portions above their lower edges cut away to provide said openings and integral shields extending from said strips at one of the edges of each of said openings in parallel relation to the adjacent slat.
2 A ventilated metal awning including an inclined roof panel having a plurality of vertically spaced, longitudinally extending slats in parallel planes, the adjacent longitudinal edges of juxtaposed slats being joined by substantially upright .strips, said strips having openings above their loweredges, integral portions of said strips extending from one of the edges of each of the openings in parallel relation to the adjacent slat to form light admitting opening and rain de- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
