Description
April 28, 1953 J; B wlLLlAMs WINDOW ANDDdoR VALANCE Filed Jan. s. 1952 INVENT OR ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 28, 1953 UNITED STATES OFFICE 1 claim. 1
This invention relates to the omcial class of awnings and canopies and more particularly a new and novel valance for windows and doors.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a Valance adapted to be adjusted to various sizes of doors or windows with little or no trouble.
Another object of this invention resides in the combination of the end and intermediate sections of the valance.
A further object of this invention resides in the particular construction of the end sections.
A still further object of this invention resides in the particular construction of the intermediate section.
Aside from the aforesaid objects, this invention resides in the particular means for hanging the valance.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims and, although this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such departures therefrom as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application:
Fig. 1 is a front View of the valance showing th end sections laterally extended by dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged broken horizontal sectional view taken approximately on line ll-t of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an exploded perspective view of the valance with the end and intermediate sections thereof in juxtaposition.
In the present illustration of this invention, the numeral 5 designates, in general, my new and improved valance formed of wood, plywood or other suitable material and consists of an intermediate or stationary section 5 to which is slidably attached laterally adjustable end sections l. Each end section l is ypreferably formed of an elongated front panel l! constructed from plywood having its upper edge secured to an inwardly directed wooden top member 9 provided with a guide groove it opposed to the upper inner surface of the front panel. The lower edges of said front panels are scalloped or otherwise ornamented as indicated by the numeral 8.
Secured to the inner surface of each end section adjacent its lower edge is an elongated guide strip I I having a guide groove l 2 in its upper edge disposed in opposed disposition to the aforesaid guide groove Ii! to receive the intermediate or stationary panel 6. Said panel 6 is preferably of a length equal to the combined lengths of the end sections when collapsed or retained in their inner adjusted positions so as to permit various lateral adjustments thereof to neatly fit narrow and wide doors and windows. The outer end of each end section is closed by a wooden end piece adapted to retain the aforesaid front panel and top member e thereof in rigid relation to one another and also form a closure therefor.
In order to dispose the valance over a door, window or other place where its use is desired, hanging means H are herein employed.
Through the instrumentality of the aforesaid assemblage of elements, the valance can be manufactured and marketed in various standard sizes so they can be adjusted to doors and windows of different widths without the use of special tools and with little work by unskilled labor.
Having thus described by invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
Adjustable end sections of door and window Valances comprising elongated front panels having ornamented lower edges, inwardly extending top members secured to the upper edges of said front panels and having elongated guide grooves therein opposed to the inner surfaces of the front panels, guide strips secured to the inner surfaces of the front panels adjacent their lower edges and having guide grooves in their upper edges disposed in opposed relation to the guide grooves in the top members, and end pieces secured to the outer ends of the front panels and top members for retaining them rigidly in right angular relation.
JAMES B. WILLIAMS.
