Application April 4, 1949, Serial No. 85,448
1 Claim. l
The present invention relates to illuminated awnings and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided an awning preferably of metallic construction and having a top portion which is, in turn, provided with angularly disposed stepped portions. The forward parts of the stepped portions are provided with a series of louvers and, within the structure there is provided a series of transversely extending lamps, preferably of the neon or other gaseous containing types, and which lamps are so arranged as to cast their rays through the louvers provided in the stepped portions. The side walls of the awning are likewise provided with a series of louvers in each case and the device as a whole is designed not only to provide luminescence beneath the awning structure but also to provide an aesthetic appearance when viewed from other angles.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of a novel arrangement of louvers in a metallic awning.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel top structure for an awning of the character set forth wherein an attractive appearance is provided for said awning.
Other and further objects will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken along line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken lalong line 4 4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating certain details of the invention, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective View likewise illustrating certain details of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein an awning, preferably of metallic construction, having side walls I0 and II each of which is provided with a series of louvers I2 and I3, respectively, a foreshortened forward wall I4 and a forwardly and downwardly sloping top having a series of stepped portions I5, I6, Il and I8.
The stepped portions are respectively provided with substantially vertically extending walls I9, 29 and 2| each of which is provided with a series of louvers 22, 23 and 24, respectively.
Suspended by means of brackets 25, 28 and 2l from the stepped portions I5, I6 and Il, respectively, is a series of transversely extending lamps 28, 29 and 36, respectively. The lamps are arranged immediately inwardly of the louvers 22, 23, and '24 in such manner as to not cast direct rays therethrough but to cast reflected rays from the inner walls of the stepped portions and the inner walls of the louvers.
It will be apparent that the lamps 23, 29 and 3i) will throw an indirect lighting effect through the louvers 22, 23 and 2i! as well as the louvers I2 and I3 to thereby eliminate the awning itself and to give a very pleasing appearance thereto while at the same time casting downwardly beneath the awning direct illumination to the area beneath such awning.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising a metallic awning having a sloping roof provided with stepped portions, a front wall and side walls, said stepped portions each having a forwardly sloping top and a downwardly and rearwardly extending section, louvers formed in the downwardly and rearwardly extending sections, louvers formed in the side walls and horizontally extending electric lamps mounted within the awning adjacent the louvers in said downwardly and rearwardly extending sections, each of said lamps being in a. plane slightly above the plane of the lower edges of its associated louvers.
GROVER C. MALONE.
