R w. ANDERSON ELECTRIC SIGN FIXTURE Filed March 7, 1924 mi IEJIHEHIQHWCISZ Patented Mar. 31,1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUSSELL w. ANDERSON, or DETROIT MICHIG-AN.
ELECTRIC-SIGN FIXTURE.
Application filed March 7, 1924. Serial No. 697,533.
" To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL W. ANDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Sign Fixtures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to electric signs and the primary object of my invention 15 to provide a novel sign support and illuminator adapted to be used on a building or other support for displaying a sign with the sign fully villuminated, clearly visible, and attractive.
Another object of my invention is to provide an ornamental sign support or bracket in which the electrical connections are concealed, yet accessible for installation and repair purposes.
Another object of this invention is to provide a strong, durable and inexpensive sign fixture with the greater part of the fixture made of standard material easily and quickly assembled. I o
The above are a few of the objects attained by my invention and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a simple form of the sign fixture, partly in section;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a wall or support member;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View of a portion of the fixture, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another form of sign fixture embodying features of my invention.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes a metallic wall member that may be fastened to a support 2. pilaster, wall or other member by screws 3 or other fastening means, and mounted on the wall member 1 and attached thereto by screws 4 is a head 5 having its rear face provided with a channel 6 to receive the wall member 1. The head 5 may also be fastened tothe support 2 by screws 7.
Concentric of the head 5 is a connection 8 for the inner tubular section 9 of an outrigger, tubular sections 10. The sections 9 and 10 are adapted to be connected by a four-way connection or condulet 11, each having a top opening 12 normally closed by a detachable plate 13 which .permits of easy which may have one or more outer:
access being had to any electrical .connections or parts within the condulets.
Extending laterally from the condulets 11 are opposed arms 14 which have the outer ends thereof provided with reflectors 15 containing incandescent lamps 16 which are connected by wires 17 extending through the arms 14 and sections "of the outrigger to the head 5 where the wires 17 extend downwardly in the channel 6 and are adapted to be connected to a suitable source of electrical energy (not shown).
The outrigger is provided with suspension means 18 for a sign 19 on both sides of which rays of light are cast by the reflectors 15 which are in a plane above the greater part of the sign so as not to interfere with the vision of pedestrians, and at the same time fully illuminate the sign for display purposes.
Co-operating with the head 5 in supporting the outrigger is a bracket construction including an angularly disposed member or strap 20 and an 8 member or brace 21. The member 2Q is attached tothe upper end of the wall member 1 and to the outer end of the outrigger, while the member 21 is interposed between the member 20 and the outrigger and attached to the outer outrigger section 10, while as shown in Fig. 4 the member 21 is attached to an intermediate outrigger section, whereby a comparatively long outrigger will be amply braced and supported from the wall member 1.
pe. I attach-considerable importance to the fact that the outrigger may be made of sections of pipe or tubing connected by the condulets and the outrigger supported by members made of metallic straps insuring adequate bracing and a degree of ornamentation.
While in the drawings there are illusof said outrigger, condulets forming part of said outrigger and permitting access to, electrical connections structural elements are trated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the susceptible to such variations and modications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. The combination of a sign, a sectional outrigger over said sign and from which said sign is supported, electrical illuminating means supported from opposite sides in said outrigger, and bracing means for said outrigger.
2. Means for supporting and illuminating a sign as called for in claim 1, wherein said illuminating means includes tubular arms supporting reflectors containing lamps with the connections to said lamps extending through said arms and outrigger.
3. A sign fixture comprising a wall member, a head attached to said member, a tubular outrigger attached to said head, a sign supported from said outrigger, a condulet forming part of sald outrigger, tubular arms carried by said condulet, electric lamps at the outer ends of said arms in proximity to said sign, wires extending through said head, said outrigger, said condulets and said arms to said lamps, and a member connecting the outer end of said outrigger to said wall member.
4. A sign fixture as called for in claim 3, and another member connecting said outrigger to the firstrmentioned member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
RUSSELL W. ANDERSON. Witnesses:
