MATTRESS COVER Filed March 2l, 1947 Patented Nov. 27, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MATTRESS COVER Edith M. Belden, Chicago, Ill.
Application March 21, 1947, Serial No. 736,347
6 Claims. l
The invention relates to covers for baby cribs and particularly to envelopes for baby mattresses.
`The art of covers for baby mattresses has received considerable attention by manufacturers and inventors and various improvements have been suggested to keep the covers in place and at the same time allow freedom of movement for the baby without disarranging the cover and attendant exposure.
According to the present invention the cover is designed as a sleeping bag and does not require any particular fastening means for being held in position.
A further object is the provision of a combination sleeping bag and slip cover whereby the cover is in intimate contact with the cover and yet enough space is provided for body movement of the child.
It is also an object of the invention to so construct the slip cover that its application to or removal from a mattress may be easily carried out without any appreciable effort.
With these and other important objects in view which will become apparent from a disclosure of the invention, the latter comprises the means described in the followingI specification, particularly pointed out in the claims forming a part thereof and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a mattress and cover constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the mattress and cover in inverted position.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
The mattress I of standard construction and per se does not form a part of the invention.
The cover comprises a central panel II which is of rectangular form and is gathered as at I2 and I3 to permit room thereunder for body movement of the child.
Near one end and at the center is a neck opening I4 which at the edge is provided with a cord or tape I 5 and a slit I6, extends longitudinally at the center of panel I I from the neck opening i4 to a point short of the foot end of the panel.
A slide fastener I'I is secured to the edge of slit I6 and a nap I8 covers said fastener.
To the panel II and extending transversely thereto are secured by a seam I9 border strips 2! which extend the full width of the mattress and are co-extensive with the area left uncovered by the panel. Longitudinal strips 2| are connected by a seam 22 to the panel I I and are also secured by sewing to the cross strips 20.
The sides of the mattress are covered by side pieces 23 and 24 which are secured by a seam 25 to the ends of strips 2l] and 2| and extend .for a' certain width underneath the mattress as shown in Fig. 2 to provide pockets in which the side portions of the mattress are received.
At the head and foot end the side pieces are formed with triangular extensions 26 and 21 which overlap and are sewed to the cross strip 20.
An elastic band 28 is secured to the free edge of the triangular extension.
While the panel'II by reason of its shirring or gathering is loose the'border strips 20 and 2I are taut and thus allow for a tight t.
The elastic bands 28 facilitate putting on and removing cf cover and further aid in maintaining the cover in taut condition.
The use of the cover is thought to be obvious from the description as well as the fact that the cover is a slip cover constructed as a sleepingl bag for keeping the child While preventing disarrangement of the cover.
While the drawing shows one embodiment of the invention, numerous changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It will be understood that the disclosed mattress cover is not restricted to use for infants, and that the body opening in the top section or panel of the cover may be omitted where it is desi-red to alford a cover for an adult mattress, since a principal feature of utility in the described structure resides in the facility with which it can be applied and removed from any size of mattress, owing to the peculiar diagonal structure on the end pockets, and by reason of which the disclosed structure is superior to prior covers utilizing envelope principles.
I, therefore, wish to include all changes, modifications and revisions constituting departures within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A cover for cushion members, such as mattresses and the like, and including a top panel having opposite pockets attached thereto to fit over the opposite longitudinal sides and the adjoining ends of a contained mattress with substantial portions underlying the bottom of said mattress, said cover including a central bottom opening extending in a sense lengthwise of the mattress and dened by oppositely spaced, longi tudinal margins of the opposite pockets which are approximately parallel along the bottom and which are extended at their opposite longitudinal ends around the ends of the contained mattress and directed diagonally and convergently toward each other into said endwalls to intersect and overlap therein, said hedges being secured together in the region of their respective intersecn tions, and the diagonal parts of said edges having elastic members secured therealong and respectively acting to draw the pockets together upon the contained mattress.
2. A mattress cover comprising a gathered rectangular central fabric panel adapted to overlie the top of a mattress, said panel having a closable body opening therein, fabric pocket portions attached to the edgewise marginal parts of said panel to fit over and contain both the longitudinal and lateral edgewise portions of said mattress and dene a wide lengthwise bottom opening on the underside of the contained mattress, said pocket portions at the respective opposite ends of the contained mattress each having a diagonal free edge partintersecting a like diagonal edge part of the opposite pocket portion to form intersecting diagonal edges in pairs at the corresponding ends of the mattress, said diagonal edge parts in each said pair interconnecting the opposite pocket portions and each having elastic elements there-along respectively acting normally to pull the opposite pocket portions toward each other upon the contained mattress, and each yieldable to facilitate widening of said bottom opening for disengagement of the pockets from the mattress.
l3. Amattress cover especially for baby mattress and comprising a fabric top panel having a closable body opening therein and rectangular pockets formed along opposite sides thereof to fitrespectively over opposite sides of the mattress andabout midway across the opposite ends of the mattress, the portions of the pockets respectively engaging the ends of the mattress as aforesaid each having a diagonal edge extending to the opposite pocket, said diagonal edges intersecting at about the mid region of said ends and each said edge having elastic means therealong, said elastic means normally acting to urge said pockets toward each other to yieldably draw the cover upon a mattress engaged-in said pockets.
4. For a mattress, a fabric enclosure to contain the mattress, the side of said enclosure which overlies the top of the mattress including a vgathered panel having a closable body opening therein, the side of said enclosure which underlies the bottom of the mattress having a wide central opening extending lengthwise of the contained mattress and around the ends of the latter into'lateral, endwise walls of the enclosure at the opposite ends of the mattress, the longitudinal marginal portions of said lengthwise opening being directed near their respective ends diagonally to intersect and overlap respectively in said endwise walls, the diagonal edges of said margins having elastic means thereon respectively acting to draw the adjoining portions of the enclosure, at least, closely upon the contained mattress. Y
5. A mattress cover including a top, a bottom, opposite longitudinal sidewalls, and opposite lateral end walls, said top consisting of a gathered center panel having a closable body-opening therein, said bottom having a mattress passage extending lengthwise along the mid-region of said bottom'and defined by approximately parallel margins of theenclosure which are directed angularly in a convergent sense beyond said bot'- toin into mutual intersection to overlap in the respective endwalls, the aforesaid angularly-directed portions of said margins being provided withelastic means lrespectively acting toA draw the cover onto the mattress.
6. A cover for mattresses and the like, and including opposite longitudinally-extensive rectanguiar pockets joined by opposite endwall panels which t respectively against the ends of the contained mattress, a top panel to overlie the top of the contained mattress and attached to'said pockets and endwall panels, said pockets each having mutually spaced, longitudinal edges Vto underlie the bottom of the mattress, said edges being approximately parallel for the length of the bottom of the contained mattress and being extended to converge angularlyin said endwall panels to intersect and overlap therein, said intersecting angular edges having elastic means therein respectively acting to draw said pockets onto the contained mattress.
