Abstract

The present invention relates to bed sheets of the type which include a fitted bottom sheet having portions which extend around and under the edges of the mattress to retain the sheet in its correct position on the mattress. A top sheet has a central portion thereof detachably secured to the foot of the fitted sheet to retain the top sheet in its position with respect to the fitted sheet and to prevent the top sheet from being pulled out by excessive force applied thereto. The top sheet and fitted sheet are secured together by a separable fastener such as a ''''Velcro'''' fastener or a zipper. The top sheet when disconnected from the fitted sheet will lie completely flat for laundering and pressing and the separable fastener on the fitted sheet is provided with a covering flap to prevent it from being contacted by the sleeper as well as to prevent damage to the fastener during laundering.

BED SHEETS BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention The present invention relates to an interconnected sheet system for beds.
Summary of the Invention The sheet system of the present invention includes a fitted bottom sheet and a top sheet detachably connected to the foot of the fitted sheet to secure the top sheet to the fitted sheet so as to prevent it from being pulled loose during the night.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a sheet system in which the top sheet is attached to the fitted bottom sheet to prevent it from being pulled loose during the night.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent during the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the invention shown in place on a bed;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of 2 the invention with the top sheet shown in flat condition;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of FIG. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary end elevation of the invention shown partially broken away and in section for convenience of illustration;
FIG. 5 is a sectional view similar to FIG. 3 of a modified form of the invention; and
FIG. 6 is a view similar to FIG. 4 of the modified form of the invention illustrated in FIG. 5.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures the reference numeral 10 indicates generally a sheet system constructed in accordance with the invention.
The sheet system 10 includes a fitted sheet 11 having a depending wall 12 at the foot thereof and including a generally horizontal flap or bottom piece 13 which extends under the mattress to secure the fitted sheet 11 in place thereon.
The wall 12 of the fitted sheet 11 is provided with a Velcro fastener strip 14 which extends horizontally thereacross as can be seen in FIGS. 3 and 4. A generally rectangular flap 15 is secured at 16 to the wall 12 and is arranged to overlie the Velcro fastener strip 14.
A generally rectangular top sheet 17 has one edge 18 thereof provided with a Velcro fastener strip 19 which is adapted to cooperate with the Velcro fastener strip 14 to secure the top sheet 17 to the fitted sheet 11. With the top sheet 17 in place on the fitted sheet 11 as seen in FIG. 1 the end portion 18 of the top sheet 17 completely encompasses the flap 15 so as to present a neat appearance.
In the use and operation of the invention the fitted sheet 11 is applied to the mattress in the usual manner and the top sheet 17 is then secured thereto by mating the Velcro strips 14 and 19 as shown in FIG. 3 and then completing the making of the bed in the usual manner. The top sheet 17 being secured to fitted sheet 11 will not readily detach therefrom and will resist pulling out at the foot as is conventional with ordinary sheets.
In FIGS. 5 and 6 a modified form of the invention is illustrated including a sheet system 10. The sheet system 10' includes a fitted bottom sheet 11 having an end wall 12' with one-half of a zipper 14 secured thereto and extending thereacross. A flap 15 is secured at 16' to the end wall 12' to cover the zipper half 14'.
A top sheet 17' has one end portion 18' provided with a zipper half 19 adapted to cooperate with the zipper half 14 on the end wall 12'.
The use and operation of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 5 and 6 is identical to that of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 4 with the only change being the substitution of a zipper 14' and 19' for the Velcro fastener l4, 19 of the preferred form of the invention.
By attaching the stop sheet 17 to the fitted sheet 11 prior to applying the fitted sheet 11 to the bed, the sheet system 10 can be applied in a single operation instead of the two operations normally required. Such saving in operations is extremely practical in hospitals, dormitories, hotels and other institutions wherein a number of beds must be made daily.
Having thus described the preferred embodiments of the invention it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a bed sheet system, a fitted bottom sheet having a depending side wall at the foot thereof, the side wall having a generally horizontal bottom piece for engaging under a mattress, said side wall having a fastener strip of hooks or loops extending horizontally thereacross, a generally rectangular flap having its upper edge secured to said side wall and said flap overlying the fastener strip, a generally rectangular flat top sheet having an edge portion, and said edge portion having a separable fastening strip of hooks or loops for detachably securing the edge portion of said top sheet to the fastener strip on the side wall, and with the top sheet in place on the fitted bottom sheet, the edge portion of the top sheet completely encompasses the flap to present a neat appearance.
