' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND REITZ, OF BIRMINGHAM, OHIO.
STOPPER Foe EMPTY BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,187, dated May 2, 1882. Application filed November 19,1881. (No model) 'To all whom it may concern:
Birmingham, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Imprm'ements in Stoppers for'Empty Barrels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to barrels, and more particularly to a device for closing the faucethole of a barrel when emptied of its contents, thus keeping it in a sweet and clean condition and saving the producers the trouble of repitching the barrel when it is to be refilled.
Figure 1 represents an end elevation of a barrel with my device inserted in the faucethole. Fig. 2 represents a portion of a barrel, taken in section through Fig. 1.
A represents a'barrel to the head of which is loosely secured a spring, B, having a plug, 0, attached to the end of it. This plug, being made of suitable material, is constructed in the form of a disk, having a circular projection, 0, on its under side. This projection is adapted to fit in the faucet-hole D, as shown in Fig. 2. Under the disk, and surrounding the projection, is a washer, E, which is held in position by being placed in a groove, 0, that is cut in the side of the projection. I
F F are depressions cut in, the head of the barrel, adapted to receive the plug 0 when not in use.
The manner of operating mydevice is of a very simple nature. When the barrel is to be filled the plug is raised and moved to the right or left and placed in the receptacle F. When emptied of its contents the plug is placed in the faucet-hole, thus preventing the inside of the barrel from getting moldy and dirty.
I do not confine the use of this device to the faucet-hole, as it may also be used in connection with the bung-hole of a barrel.
What I claim is-- The con1bination,with a movable springarm, of a plug secured to one end of said arm, and a barrel-head provided with receptacles for the plug'when not in the faucet-hole, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FERDINAND REITZ.
