CARPET-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,163, dated May 2, 1882.

To all whom at may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. HENDER- SON, of Iron Mountain, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in GarpetFasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a View in perspective, showing the improvement in position; Fig. 2, a vertical cross-section taken through the fastenerin position, the section being taken in the line of one of the screws used in attaching the upper strip to the wall-board Fig. 3, a vertical section taken in the line of one of the screws used in holding the lower strip; Fig. 4, a plan ofa portion of the lower strip, showing one of the bearing-plates; and Fig. 5, a vertical section, showing a modification of the fastener.

In the present improvement the carpet is held in place upon the floor by means of a strip or plate that is pressed downward upon the carpet, binding it down to the floor and sufficiently to' hold the carpet from slipping upon the floor, the strip or plate in turn being held down upon the carpet by means of suitable screws, bolts, or similar parts, that are held and work in a holder, strip, plate, or boss that is attached to the wall or wall-board of the room wherein the carpet is laid, and that press upon the strip or plate firstnamed, as seen in the drawings, whcrc A represents'the carpet; B, the floor of the room; 0, the wall of the room, and D the wallboard, all of the usual construction.

E represents the strip or plate that is pressed upon the carpet. Its preferable form is that shown, being grooved or notched in its under side at c c, and having aflange, e.

Frepresents the holder thatis attached to the wall or wall-board, the attachment being preferably effected by means of screws, such as G. The holder F may be a strip, such as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, or a boss, such as shown at F,

Fig. 5, or of other forms suitable for holding down upon the'strip or plate E, so as to press the latter upon the carpet, or to be withdrawn therefrom when it is desired to release the part E, the operation of the improvement being as follows: The holderFis first attached to the wall-board D. Then by means of screws, such as H, and which are held and arrangedto be worked vertically in the holder, a downward pressure is brought to bear upon the strip E, causing the latter to bear with sutlicientforce upon the carpet to holditin place. Thelower ends of the screws H may bear directly upon the strip E; or, if desired, bearing plates I may be interposed between the screws and the strip. More or less pressure, as desired, is produced upon the strip E and carpet A, according to the vertical adjustment ofthe screws H in the holder F, when the screws are worked farther down in the holder a tighter hold being obtained upon the carpet. the grooves e c a better hold is obtained upon the carpet. The flange 0 serves to conceal the screws G and to protect the holder F.

I claim- The within-described carpet-fastener, forming a complete molding on the wall or mop board, composed of holding-strips F and E, each having'outer curved surfaces to match or correspond with the other, the former, F, se' cured to the wall or mop board and the latter, E, with right-angular recess to match the outer edge of F, and serrated on its under surface or edge, and adapted to be secured beneath F by vertical screws which pass through F, substantially as set forth.
