Description

No. 805,675. PATENTED NOV. 28, 1905. C. U. SHIVE.
I REIN HOLDER. APPLIGATION FILED FEB. 13. 1905.
gm W1 l -mum" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALEB C. SHIVE, OF FREDERICK, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
RElN-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Application filed February 13, 1905. Serial No. 245,542.
'a means for holding reins of harness when a driver is not upon the vehicle. It is contemplated, however, that the device may be utilized as a means for holding lines or'the like,
"since the operative principle thereof may be applied to various uses] For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
While the invention maybe adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- 1 Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention, the reins or lines heing shown in full lines, as when clamped 'by means of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
- The device comprises a plate 1, forming a base or attaching part having suitable openings 2, through which screws or similar fastenings may be passed in order to secure the plate to the side of the buggy or any vehicle or similar support. A flange 3 projects laterally from the plate 1 at its lower edge portion, and the upper surface of this flange 3 is roughened or ribbed longitudinally thereof, as shown at A. The flange 3.is braced and strengthened by means of a vertical web 5, which extends from the under side of the flange, being integral with an extension 6, projecting from the lower edge portion of the plate 1 aforesaid.
A clamp member is mounted upon the plate 1, and said member consists of a lever7, provided at its lower end with a cam 8, which cooperates with the flange 3 in effecting the clamping action of the device. The lever 7 is pivoted to the plate 1, a suitable pivot-pin 9 being provided which extends through the plate 1 near the upper portion of the latter. The lower portion of the cam 8 is formed with laterally-extending flanges 10, and the engaging surface of the cam is ribbed or roughened,
as shown at 11. The under sides of the flanges 10, which project from the cam, are flush with the engaging side of the cam, and the roughened portion of the cam extends across the flanges 10 to thereby increase the engaging surface of the member 8 in a manner which will be clearly apparent. By forcing the lever 7 upwardly the cam is raised from the flange 3 of the plate 1, and reins or lines may be readily disposed upon the flange 3 beneath the cam of said lever 7, so that by slightly depressing the lever the cam 8 will engage the reins, and any tendency of the reins to pull away from the clamp device will only cause the cam 8 to more firmly grip or engage the same and effectively prevent displacement of the reins from the part to which the clamp device is attached.
The cam 8 of the lever 7 is spaced from the plate 1 by means of a boss 12, which extends from the side of the cam. Facing said plate 1 and projecting from the plate 1 in the space between this part and the cam 8 is a lug 13. The lug 13 is preferably formed with the plate 1 and extends laterally therefrom in rear of the boss 12, being so disposed as to readily engage the rear portion of the adjacent flange 10, which projects from the cam 8. The lug 13 is utilized as a stop to limit the upward movement of the lever 7, so as to obviate all likelihood of said lever assuming a position inconvenient to quick manipulation thereof in clamping parts, as in the actual use of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A reinholder comprising the plate 1 having the flange 3 projected laterally from its lower portion, the upper surface of said flange being ribbed or roughened, the lever 7 pivoted to the plate 1, the boss 12 projecting from a side of the lever toward the plate 1 to space said lever therefrom, the cam 8 at the lower end Patented Nov. 28, 1905.
