UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE P. ROSE, OF FENTON, MICHIGAN.
WHIP-SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,021, dated September 29,1885.
Application filed February 14, 1885. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE P.ROSE, residing at Fenton, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip-Sockets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2is a back view. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken where the dotted lines 00 x are marked on Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken where the dotted lines 3 y are marked on Fig. 1.
This invention has relation to means for fastening whip-socketsin position; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices; all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a metallic whip-socket having a vertically-elongated back or back plate, B, adapted to fit upon the leather-covered rail of the dash, as indicated at O. The back B is provided on each side with a perforation, D, which is usually at about its middle portion.
E is the clamping bar or strip, which is made in concave curved form to fit the outer contour of the rail over the dash-leather. The clamp is provided with perforations F at its ends.
G represents a rivet or screw having the under side of its head made convex, as indicated at K, and this rivet is formed with a shoulder at L, with which the back of the socket is in contact when said rivet is in position, having beenpasscd through the outer perforation,F,of the clamp and secured in the perforation D, on the outer side of said back. The socket having been adjusted in place on the dash, a perforation is made through the leather or the inner side of the rail, and a screw, S, is passed through the clamp and leather into the inner perforation, D, of the back B, said perforation being threaded to engage the screw. The object is to provide a fastening which will permit the socket to be moved upon the dash up and down in getting it into proper position without defacing the leather of the dash.
The rounded head of the outer rivet or screw, G, has a sort of hinge action, and enables the operator to move the clamp outward or away from the surface of the leather while making the adjustment, and when the adj ustment is made the inner screw is applied and the clamp is brought up against the dash and fastened by the screw S.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination, with a whip-socket and its elongated back, of an outer clamp perforated at each end, a shouldered rivet or screw, G, having the under side ofits head convex, and the clamp-screw S, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE P. ROSE.
