IMPROVEMENT lN RAILWAY-RAIL CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,715, dated February 9, 1875; application filed December 17, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN L. STEWART, of Ellicott City, in the county of Howard and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Railroad-Rails and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a plan view, Fig. 2, a vertical section through line 00 no.

The object of this invention is to provide a fastening for railroad-rails in which spikes to 'fasten the rails are dispensed with, and the devices are so constructed that the greater the pressure upon the rails the tighter the latter are clamped. It consists in the combi nation of clamping-hooks with boxes, in which the said hooks are pivoted, and a base-plate, upon which the boxes are held in position by keys. My invention further consists in the combination of the grooved base-plate, the sliding boxes, the pivoted hooks, the bearingplate, and the cushion of rubber, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing, A represents the metallic base-plate, provided with holes a for attaching the same to the ties. The said plate is also provided with the longitudinal groove 1), the undercut ledges c, and the ledges d. B are the boxes, which have tongues 6 upon their under surface, that move in the grooves b in the base-plate, and seats f for the reception of ion F. Said plate is provided with extensions j, which enter the grooves of the hook, and form the connection between the latter and the rail in the place of said connection. However, I may make the bearing-plate perfectly plain upon its edges, and the hooks with a ledge or projection, which extends below the plate, and forms the bearing for the same.

When metallic ties are used, I may dispense with the base-plate A, and form grooves and ledges upon the ties to receive the clamping devices. I

In the arrangement of my devices, the boxes are first placed upon the base'plate with the tongues inthe grooves. The rubber cushion and bearing-plate are then inserted between the boxes, and the rail placed thereon. The hooks are next inserted in the boxes, the bearing-plate fitted into the hooks, and the combination of the devices tightened and clamped by the keys, thus forming a secure and immovable fastening for the rail, with an elastic base, and one in which the strength and security of the devices are commensurate with the strain exerted upon them.

By means of the above-described chair or fastening, the wear and tear upon the rollingstock is greatly reduced, as is also the expense of keeping up the repairs.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination of the hooks D, the boxes B, the keys 0, and the base-plate A, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of the grooved baseplate, the sliding boxes, the pivoted hooks, the bearingplate, and the elastic cushion, substantially as and for the purpose described.
