RAlL-BRACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1906.
Application filed May 1,1906. Serial No- 314,668.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES F. KELLY, aresident of Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Braces and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved railbrace, the object of the invention being to provide an improved brace and cooperating block or casting to insure the firm engagement of the brace with the rail and prevent any possibility of lateral movement of the rail and the invention consists in. certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the assembled brace and a portion of a rail, and Figs. 4 and 5 are views of the brace and block or casting.
1 represents a railroad-rail of ordinary construction secured on ties 2 and braced against lateral movement by my improvements, which will now be described.
Myimprovements comprise two men1bers namely, the brace 3 and its cooperating block or casting 4. The latter comprises a base portion to be securely clamped onthe rail-base by spikes and an upright extension 5 at the inner edge of the base. This extension is provided with dovetailed vertical flanges 6 on its inner face and has a rounded upper edge '7, which serves as a fulcrum for the brace, as will hereinafter appear.
The brace 3 comprises a base having spike openings S, and this base is curved upward, as shown at 9, and made with an integral approximately vertical tongue 10. The tongue 10 has beveled edges to enter the dovetailed flanges 6 and have sufficient play therein to permit the brace to fulcrum on the upper edge 7 of casting 4 and force the tongue 10 tightly against the rail. The up per end of the brace is enlarged and rounded, as shown at 11, to snugly fit under the railhead or tread and further strengthen the rail against lateral movement.
In applying my improvements the tongue 10 is inserted between flanges 6 and the block or casting 4, securely clamped to the rail-base by spikes, as shown. The base portion of the brace 3 is then forced down onto the tie, which will fulcrum the brace on the edge 7 of the block or casting and jam the tongue 10 tightly against the rail-web, and when the brace is secured by spikes driven through the openings 8 into the tie the rail will be se curely held.
A great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A rail-brace having a depending tongue at one end and a base portion at its other end, and means for fulcruming the brace between its ends to permit the tongue to be forced against the rail when the base portion is moved downward and secured.
2. The combination of a fixed block or casting, a rail-brace fulcrumed thereon, bearing at one end against a rail and secured at its other end.
3. The combination of a block or casting to be secured on a rail-base, a brace fulcrumed on said block or casting, a tongue on the inner end of the brace to engage the rail, and a base portion on the other end of the brace to be secured against movement.
4. The combination of a block or casting to be secured on a rail-base, a brace fulcrumed on said block or casting, a tongue on the inner end of the brace movably mounted between flanges on the block or casting, and a base portion on the outer end of the brace having openings for spikes to secure the same to a tie.
5. The combination of a block or casting to be secured on a rail-base, an upright extension on the block or casting having dovetailed flanges on its inner face, a brace fulcrumed on the upper edge of the extension, a tongue on the brace movable in the flanges of the extension and when the outer base portion of the brace is forced down, will bear and an enlargement on the brace to engage 10 the Wheel-head or tread portion of the rail.
