To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST STILKE, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have-invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Tie Fasteners, of which the following is a specificatlon.
This invention relates to a fastener for securing the rails to the ties of a railway.
I The object of this invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive fastener of this character Which serves not" only as a means for securing a rail to a tie but also serves as a tie plate to prevent undue wearing of the tie and which can be readily applied to the tie and rail when building the railway and also removed therefrom when making repairs. h

1 represents a railway tie which is constructed of wood as usual and which is arcrosswise underneath the rail 2 of the railway. p
My 'mproved fastener for securing the rail to the tie comprises generally a tie plate 3, a locking plate 4 and a'plurality of screws 5, 6 or equivalent means. The
plate preferably has a flat underside which engages with the upper side of the tie. On its upper side the tie plate is provided with a fiat elevated face 7 which engages with a part of the underside of the base of the rail said part extending transversely inward from the outer edge of the rail base to about three quarters of the width of said base. Near the outer end of the tie plate the same is provided on its upper side with an in-v wardly projecting hook 8 which] engages 'over the adjacent outer edge of the rai base for holding the rail down on the tie plate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. 'At the Inner end of the tie plate the same is provided on its upper side with a recess 9 which ex-' tends from one longitudinal edge of the tie plate to the other and which has its inner,
part arranged underneath about one uarter of the width of the undersideof t e rail base at the inner edge thereof while the outer part of said recess is arranged beyond the inner edge of the rail base. The inner longitudinal wall or side 10 of therecess 9 is undercut or beveled and the outer longitudinal wall 11 thereof is preferably vertical, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The locking plate rests in the recess 9 and its inner end extends underneath the inner part of the rail base and engages its upper side with the underside of the rail base while itsouter part is arranged beyond the inner part of the rail base. The inner edge of the locking plate is beveled and en gages underneath the inner undercut wall of the recess and the outer end of the looking plate is vertical and engages with the correspondin wall of the recess. On the inner part 0 the locking plate the sameis,
provided on its upper side with an inwardly projecting hook 12 which engages over the inner edge of the base of the rail, as shown in 'Figs'l and 2, for holding this part of the rail down on the tie plate. The outer edge of the tie plate is provided with openings 13 which receive the screws 5 whereby this end of thetie plate is secured to the tie. The inner end of the tie plate is provided vwithin its recess with openings 15 and the locking plate is also provided with 0 enings 14 adjacent to its hook and in reg1ster with the openings 15 ofthe tie plate, each pair of openings 15, 14 of the tie and locking plates rece1ving one of the screws 6 for securing the same to the tie and the rail.
'In securing a rail to the tie the tie plate is first placed on the tie, then the rail is placed on the tie plate and engaged with the outer edge of its base under the hook of the tie plate, then, the locking plate is inserted in the recess of the tie plate so that part of the same projects under the inner edge of the rail base and the hook of the locking plate'engagcs over the last mentioned edge of the railbase. Inasmuch as the rail engages the greater part of its underside with the to of the tie plate the same is fully su porte and need notbe again raised or shi ted to permit of insertin the locking plate underneath the same, t ereby facilitating the laying of the railwa By extending the inner end of the 100 in plate underneath the rail and interloc ing the same with the tie plate'the rail is held down on the tieplate mdependently of the screws 6, thereby preventing the rail from becoming i '1.
