RECEPTACLE Filed May 24, 1946 Patented Get. 16, 1951 ATES PATENT ()FFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to combs and more particularly to combs having a receptacle combined therewith.
The object of my invention is to provide a comb having a hollow back adapted to receive a variety of articles, such as bobby pins, hair pins, straight pins, safety pins and the like.
A further object of my invention is to provide a comb having a hollow back forming a receptacle for pins and the like which is easily accessible, but at the same time can be securely closed to prevent spilling of the contents of said container.
Other objects of my invention will appear in the following specification describing my invention with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating several embodiments of my invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational side view'of a comb according to my invention showing the receptacle in the back of the comb closed.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the receptacle open.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional detail view of an end of the back of the comb, wherein a handle for opening and closing the receptacle is located.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a comb having a pin receptacle in its back with a modified form of a closing device for said receptacle.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a comb with a pin receptacle in its back with another modified form of closure for the receptacle, and
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on line 1-1 in Figure 6.
Referring now in detail to the drawing the comb according to my invention consists of a plurality of teeth Ill extending downwardly from and preferably integrally formed with a hollow back II. This block back is shaped preferably cylindrical. The rear end of this cylindrical hollow back is closed as at l2, while the front end [3 is open and adapted to receive a plug [4 therein, having a radially extending flange l5 thereon, the outside diameter of which is equal to the outside diameter of the hollow cylindrical back II.
This back has an elongated opening l6 intermediate its ends to permit access to the inside of the back.
A hollow cylindrical member I! is provided with an elongated opening l8 but is closed at both of its ends. It fits rotatably into the hollow cylindrical back I l and has on its front end wall a forwardly extending round stem 19 arranged rotatably in a hole centrally located in the plug M. An operating knob handle 20 is rigidly mounted on the stem i9 and abuts with its rear end the front surface of the plug M, which seals the front end of the cylindrical hollow back and prevents longitudinal movement of the cylindrical member I! relative to the hollow back II.
From the above description it is easy to understand, that the receptacle formed in the hollow back can be opened by rotating the inner hollow cylindrical member I! by means of the knob handle 20 so that the elongated opening 18 in said member coincides with the elongated opening E6 in the hollow back I l. Many articles may be carried in the receptacle formed in the hollow back, such as straight pins, hair pins, safety pins, bobby pins and the like. By rotating the inner cylindrical member 11 until its wall covers the elongated opening I6 in the back H the receptacle is closed to prevent accidental spilling of its contents.
In the modification of my invention illustrated in Figure 5 the back 2! of the comb is also formed like a hollow cylinder and its rear end 22 is also permanently closed. The front end 23 is open. A closing cap 24 is hingedly attached to a hinge member 25 provided on top of the hollow back 2| adjacent its front end. A securing lug 28, formed on the wall of the hollow back 25, is located diametrically opposite of the hinge member 25 and extends forwardly from the open end 23 of the hollow back 2|, so that it will be engaged b the wall of the closing cap 24, when the latter is swung intoback closing position as shown in full lines in Figure 5. The subject matter of this modification of my invention is embodied in a divisional application Serial No. 770,647, filed August 26, 1947, which has become abandoned.
A still further modification of the comb according to my invention is illustrated in Figures 6 and 7. The rear end 27 of the back of the comb in this modification is formed as a hollow cylinder having a closed rear end 23. The forward portion 29 of the back of the comb is shaped semicylindrical and has in each side a longitudinally extending groove 36 adjacent its upper lips. The front end of this semi-cylindrical back portion 253 is closed by a semi-circular end wall 3i.
A semi-cylindrical cover 32 has longitudinally extending, inwardly directed tongues 33 thereon adapted to engage the grooves 30 in the comb back slidably. The rear end of the semi-cylin- 3 drical cover 32 is open and adapted to fit closely onto the open front part of the cylindrical rear end 21 of the comb back. On the front the sliding cover 32 has a knob shaped closed end 34 adapted to close the front end of the receptacle formed by the back of the comb.
In this modification the receptacle in the back of the comb is opened or closed respectively by sliding the cover 32 forwardly or rearwardly respectively. The subject matter of this modification of my invention is embodied in a divisional application Serial No. 770,646, filed August 26, 1947, which has matured into Patent No. 2,497,983.
Having described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A back for a comb comprising a first hollow cylinder having one end open, a second hollow cylinder having its ends closed positioned within said first named cylinder and mounted in the latter for rotational movement, each of said cylinders being provided with a longitudinally extending opening intermediate its ends, the opening in said second cylinder being registrable with the opening in said first cylinder upon rotational movement of said second cylinder relative to said first named cylinder, a stem projecting from one of the closed ends of said second cylinder extend-- ing through and beyond the open end of said first named cylinder, a plug loosely circumposed about said stem and in frictional engagement with the inner wall of the open end of said first named cylinder, and a hand actuable means on the pro jecting end of said stem for efiecting the rotational movement of said second cylinder.
2. A back for a comb comprising a first hollow cylinder having one end open, a second hollow cylinder having its ends closed positioned within said first named cylinder and mounted in the latter for rotational movement, each of said cylinders being provided with a 1ongitudinally ex-* tending opening intermediate its ends, the open ing in said second cylinder being registrable with the opening in said first cylinder upon rotational movement of said second cylinder relative to said first named cylinder, a stem projecting from one of the closed ends of said second cylinder extend ing through and beyond the open end of said first named cylinder, a plug loosely circumposed about said stem and in frictional engagement with the inner wall of the open end of said first named cylinder, a flange on said plug and bearing against the open end of said first named cylinder and a knob on the projecting end of said stem for effecting the rotational movement of said second cylinder.
