Description
Sept. 18, 1951 E ROY- RQQT 2,568,365
VANITY Box Filed Oct. 18, 1949 IN V EN TOR. Le R03 Roof ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 18, 1951 was tzii ficry I ze vRoy.Itoot, Stamfotd, (lonmtassignqn to..S,covill Manufacturing gornpany waterbury, Conn., a corporation of Connecticut i This invention relates to a cosmetic'container and particularly to a vanity boxforus'ewithdoose 7 powder.
It-is, therefore, the principal object of this in vention to provide 'animpr'oved loose powder type of vanity box in which the hinge member and" if desired, also the'catch member forthe cover lid of an interior compartment may be assembled and held'in place merely by the assembly of an" insert-member intothe body compartment'w'ith-j out resorting-to rivets or other-complex'deviccs.
With-the-above and other objects in viewthe" invention will be hereinafter more'particularl'y described in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan View of a vanity box container as it appears with -thecove'r in open position.
Fig: 2 'isr-a vertical sectional view thr'orighrthe box on an enlarged scale showing the. cover in closed position. i M

Referring now tothe drawing in which like reference numerals denote parts throughout the several views, the numeral refers"to;"a'"

A mirror [5 may be positioned on the inside of the cover and held there in place by the usual form of bezel I6. 7
In order to provide for a closed compartment within the body ill to accommodate a supply of loose powder, there is provided an insert memher is! which; pursuant to my invention is a pla'stic ring preferably of substantially square shape in cross" section. The term insert member? as used'herein' and in the appended claims means a holding member or powder well adapted to" fit within the body member. This ring. constructed so as to have a snug telescopic fit within theiinterior diameter of the;necked.-in portion I1 and' to lie against" the bottom wall" of the body.
A eovr lid" I8 is fashioned to fit against the upper surface of the insert member I! and thus provide for a closed compartment or well IS'withinthe' body mei'nb'er' [0' for the reception of loose powder; The cover lid 18 is preferably formed with an inwardly offset portion 20 dimensioned so' asto snugly fit within the'inte'rior diameter of the insert ring I8"to'pre'vei1t leakage at'that' point; t a

If desired the relative positions of the hinge barrels 24 on the cover lid may be constructed sothat when the cover lid is in closed position it will be subjected to a tension force that will;
partially open the cover lid upon release of the catch lug 26.
While the invention is shown and described in what we believe tobe its best form, it will be understood that various changes and variations may be made in the particular structure disclosed without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A vanity box comprising body and cover members hinged together, an insert member fitted into said body member and providing a well compartment for loose powder, said insert member being substantially square shape in cross section, a cover lid for closing the top of said insert member, an L-shaped hinge lug member engaging about the outer and under sides of said insert member and held in place against the bottom and side walls of ,the body member by the assembly of said insert member into said body member, said hinge lug having a hinge barrel disposed over and against the top surface of said insert member, and means hingedly connecting said cover lid to said hinge barrel.
2. A vanity box comprising body and cover members hinged together, an insert member fitted into said body member and providing a well compartment for loose powder, said insert member being substantially rectangular shape in cross section, a cover lid for closing the top of said compartment, an L-shaped hinge lug memher, said insert member having a recess provided in its outside and bottom surfaces for the r reception of said hinge lug, said lug being held,
in said recess against the bottom and side walls of the body member by the assembly of said insert member into said body member, and means for hingedly connecting said coverlid to said hinge lug. I p.
3. A vanity box comprising body and cover members hinged together, an insert member substantially rectangular shape in cross section and fitted into said body member for providing a Well compartment for loose powder, a cover lid of said hinge lug and positioned to lie against the upper surface of insert member, and means hingedly connecting said cover lid to said hinge barrel.
4. A vanity box as defined by claim 3 wherein the position of said hinge barrel relative to the lower leg of said lug member is such as to effect a frictional engagement upon said insert member.
5. A vanity box comprising body and cover 'members hinged together, an insert member rectangular in cross section and fitted into said body member for providing a well compartment for loose powder, a cover lid for closing the top of said insert member, a pair of L-shaped lug members diametrically positioned on the outside I of said insert member with their lower legs disposed thereunderneath, one of said lug members having means for hingedly connecting to said cover lid and the other lug member having means for .releasably retaining said cover lid in closed position, and said lug members being held against the bottom and side walls of the body member by the assembly of said insert member into said body member.
6. A vanity box as defined by claim 3 wherein said insert member is provided with diametric recesses in its outer and under walls for the reception of said L-shaped lugs.
7. A vanity box comprising cup-shaped round body and cover members hinged together, said body member having inwardly necked rim adjacent its upper edge for the reception of the cover wall, a plastic ring member telescopically fitted into innerdiameter of the necked ring and being substantially rectangular in cross section, a cover lid for closing against the top of said ring member, an L'-shaped hinge lug member, a recess provided in the outer and under surfaces of said ring member for the reception of said lug member, said lug member being held in assembledposition in said recess against the bottom and side walls of the body member by the assembly of said insert member into said body member, and means hingedly connecting said cover lid to said hinge lug member.
