UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BABY CARRIAGE SUPPORT Louis Gottfried, New York, N. Y. Application September 10, 1 947, Serial.No.773,239
3 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to baby carriages and in particular to foldable carriages.
Foldable carriages are known which comprise a running gear which supports an upper frame carrying the carriage body by means of crosswise arranged bars.
The conventional running gear includes securel-y connected axles of the carriage and for this reason it is not necessary to provide any means for preventing any sideward movement of the axles in the running gear.
If, however, a running gear, as disclosed in my Patent No. 2,266,752, dated December :23, 1941, is used, in which the axles can move freely sidewards relative to the chassis of the carriage, it is of importance to limit or prevent the sideward movement of the axles entirely.
It is, therefore, the main object of the present invention to provide means for limiting the sideward movement of the axles in a foldable carriage, the running gear of which is connected with the chassis by means of springs.
With this and other objects in view which will become. apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational side view of the carriage;
Fig. 2 is a section along the lines 22 of Fig. 3, showing the body in full;
Fig. 3 is a front end view of the carriage;
Fig. 4 is a rear end view of the carriage;
Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view along the lines 5-5 of Fig; 1;
Fig. 5a is a fragmentary perspective view of one axle with the spring arrangement, the wheel being removed for purpose of better demonstration;
Fig. 6 is an elevational view of another embodiment of the carriage; and
Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the carriage shown in Fig. 6.
Referring now to the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 to 5, it will be seen that the carriage comprises a running gear I which consists of two axles 2 which are connected by means of one or more bars 3. Each axle 2 carries at both ends Wheels 4. The chassis 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, comprises two side members 6 which extend from the front next to the body I of the carriage to be bent towards the axles 2 and upon passing the latter with a raised portion above each axle, to be bent upwards again towards the rear end of the body I.
Two horizontally extending springs .8 and a vertically extending spring 9 are provided be: tween each side member 6 and the corresponding ends of the axles 2, thereby connecting the running gear I with the chassis 5 by resilient means which allow a vertical movement and a movement in longitudinal direction of the axles 2 relative to the chassis 5w However, in order to limit the relative move.- ment between the axles Z-and the chassis 5 in s ideward .directiomin accordance with the present invention, a connecting member 10 is provided between the raised portions of each side member :6 and the corresponding axle 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The connecting member I0 bringsabout a connection between the axles 2 and the side members 6 in addition to the springs 8 and 9. The members H] :serve mainly the purpose of preventinga ssideward movement of the axles 2 relative to the chassis 15, without limitingsubstantially the vertical movement or the ion, rg-itudinal movement of the axles due-to the :springy action of the connecting member LIB which swings aroundthe fastening point I0.
The foldable carriage is equipped in conventional manner with cross bars II on each side of the body I, which cross bars II are connected by links I2 with one end of each side member 6. One of the cross bars I I extends into the pusherhandle I3 and the upper ends of the cross bars II are pivotally connected with an upper frame I4 which carries the body I, and the hood I5.
The embodiment disclosed in Figs. 6 and '7 is substantially identical with the first embodiment described above, with the exception of the chassis 5', the side members 6' of which show one single raised portion extending from one axle 2' to the other and instead of arranging two oppositely extending horizontal springs 8 and a vertical spring 9 adjacent each end of the axles 2, just one horizontal spring 8', and one vertical spring 9' is provided at each end of the axles 2'.
The arrangement according to the present invention allows the use of compression springs with all its advantages in connection with a foldable carriage and the connecting member I0 assures proper operation of the carriage.
While I have disclosed the invention in connection with two different embodiments of the chassis, it is to be understood that the invention has been described by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the invention being defined in the appended claims and in the stated objects.
I claim:
1. In a baby carriage, a running gear, comprising two axles carrying wheels, a chassis comprising two side members extending perpendicularly to and above said axles and having two raised portions at the points of crossing said axles, two substantially horizontal helical springs and one substantially vertical helical spring connecting each of said side members at their raised portions with said axles adjacent their ends, a carriage body supported by said chassis, a resilient flat metal connecting member secured at one of its ends to about the center of each of said axles and at the other of its ends to the raised portion of the corresponding side member, and said flat metal connecting member being disposed in a plane running through the axle to which it is secured and through the axis of the corresponding vertical spring, so that action of the vertical spring is" permitted due to the resiliency of'said fiat'metal member while a rigid connection is provided between the axles and the .chassis preventing side movement of said axles relative to said chassis.
2. In a baby carriage, a running gear comprising two axles carrying wheels, a chassis comprising two side members extending perpendicularly to said axles and having a single raised portion substantially above both of said axles, one substantially horizontal helical spring and one substantially vertical helical spring connecting each of saidside members at their crossing points with the axles adjacent the ends of the latter, a carriage body supported by said chassis, a resilient fiat metal connecting member secured at one of its ends to about the center of eachof said axles and at its other end to the raised portion of the corresponding side member, and said flat member being disposed in a plane running throughthe axle to which it is secured and through the axis of the corresponding vertical spring, so that action of the vertical spring is permitted due to the resiliency of said fiat metal member while a rigid connection is provided between the axles and the chassis preventing side movement of said axles relative to said chassis.
3. In a baby carriage, a running gear comprising two axles carrying wheels, a chassis comprising two side members disposed perpendicularly to and above said axles, and having two raised portions at the points of crossing said axles, a carriage body supported by said chassis, resilient means forming a first connection between said running gear and said chassis and a resilient flat metal connecting member secured at one of its ends to approximately the center of each axle and at its, other end to the corresponding side member and each of said flat metal connecting members disposed in a vertical plane in a substantially vertical plane through said axle and forming a second connection between said running gear and said chassis in such manner that action of the resilient means in vertical direction is permitted due to the resiliency of said flat metal member while a rigid connection is provided between said axle and said chassis preventing side movement of said axle relative to said chassis.
