SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,712, dated April 18, 1882.

Application filed March 8, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, \VILLIAM Manson and FREDERICK BERTRAM, both citizens of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, E. D, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bureau-Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of bedsteads constructed to be folded up into the seniblance of a bureau or other similar articleof furniture; and it consists in a base-frame divided into two sections, which are hinged together, in combination with a bedstead, also divided into two sections, which are hinged together in a vertical plane with the frame-sections and hinged to the latter respectively at equal distances from the frame-joints and bedsteadjoints,sothatthebedstcad-srctionsareadapted to fold within the base-frame to a vertical position or to unfold and rest on the frame in a horizontal position, as hereinafter more fully explained.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan or top view when the bedstead is unfolded. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section when it is folded. Fig. 3 is an inverted .plan view when it is folded. Fig. 4 is avertical section when it is unfolded.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.

The letter A designates the sections of the base-frame, and B those of the bedstead. G D respectively are the joints, whereby the framesections and bedstead-sections are hinged together; and E, the hinges connecting the bedstead-sections to the frame-sections.

The joints 1) of the bedstcad sections are situated in a vertical plane with the joints 0 of the frame-sections, and said joints D, moreover, are at the upper or inner edges of the bedstead-sections, while the joints 0 are at the lower edges of the frame-sections. The joints E are located at equal distances from the joints (3 D upon the adjoining edges of the baset'rame and bedstead-sections. In folding the bedstead, when the sections B B, Fig. 4, are being closed they swing vertically on the hinges E, and in such movement the upper ends of the base-frame sections A A are spread apart or in a direction away from each other, so that they tilt on their lower ends, which is (No model.)

permitted by the hinges (J, until the sections B B reach an upright, or nearly upright, po

sition, when the sections A A resume their vertical positions. These movements are due to the relative arrangement of thejoiuts U D E, and by means thereof the bedstead-sections are permitted and caused to fold within the base-frame, as shown in Fig. 2, or to unfold and rest on the frame, as shown in Fig. 4:. Another result of said arrangement is that both sections of the bedstead can be adjusted simultaneously and by taking hold of either of them.

A hook and staple are provided, as at f g, for the purpose of retaining the bedstead-sections in their unfolded positions, and folding legs are applied to both sections to assist in their support. The bedstead sections, moreover, are provided respectively with a head and foot board, as at i j, one of which folds inward, while the other folds outward, and is concealed when said sections are folded up by a hollow cap-piece, B, applied to one section to overlap the other.

Within the bedstead-sections are arranged bed-bottoms B which in this example are composed of interlaced bands secured to end rods, k, and suitable shapes are given to said sections as well as the frame-sections, so that when folded the whole forms in appearance a bureau or any other similar article of furniture.

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the base-frame divided into two sections, A A, hinged together by hinges 0, located adjacent to the lower edges of the sections for permitting the said sections to tilt, as described, with the bedstead composed of two sections, B B, hinged together in the vertical plane ofthc base-frame hinges, and also hinged to said base-frame sections, as and for the purpose set forth.
