GATE-HINGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 256,670, dated April 18, 1882.

10 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IRA GAs'roN, a citizen of the United States of Amerioa,rresiding at Schoolcraft, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges for Farm- Gates andBarn-Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to hinges for farmgates and barn-doors; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, as herein shown and described.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front view of a gate having my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hinge attachment detached. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the hinge attachment, Fig. 5 is a detached view of the bolt and block forming the pivotal connection between gate and post.

A designates the gate, having a number of horizontal rails or bars secured to uprightsin the usual manner.

B indicates the i'astcnii'ig-post, and O the hinge-post, ot' the gate.

D represents a grooved wheel, pivoted in a vertical block, E, which has a pivotal connection with one end of ahorizontal bolt,F, which passes into or through the post 0, and is usually secured in place by means of a nut. When in proper position the boltF passes into the post 0 in a diagonaldireetion, as shown in Fig. 2, the block E being in a vertical position between two bars of the gate, the upper bar, Gr,restingin the groove of wheel D. The lower extremity of the block E is usually notched or bifurcated to straddle a bar, H, of g the gate.

For the purpose of the pivotal connection of the block E and bolt F the said block is usually provided with a recess, a, to receive a block, b, whichfits therein. One end of the block b is provided with lugs to receive the end of bolt F, which is pivoted thereto, (see Fig. 5,) and said block, being placed in the recess a, is secured therein by a bolt, f, passing through blocks E and b; or the recess a and block b may be dovetailed or flaring from the point where the bolt is pivoted to the opposite side of the block E. The block E is also recessed, as shown at c, so that it may have a lateral movement on the bolt F.

Midway between the posts B and (J and under the gate A is lisually placed a pivoted roller, (1, which also serves to support'the gate in opening or closing it. The gate is openedby pushing it lengthwise from the post B a distance of about or near half the length of the gate, the latter moving on the wheel D. The gate is then turned to a position at right angles with the line of the fence, the block E turning with the gate in this movement.

The construction described is well adapted for the main doors of barns, requiring but little modification in the structure of the door.

It is also cheap and durable and readily adjusted to the ordinary bar-gate.

Having described my invention, 1 claim- 1. A hinge attachment for gates, consisting of a block, E, holding wheel D, said block being recessed to receive a block, I), incombination with block I), having a bolt, F, pivoted thereto, substantially as and for the purposes described.
