GATE.
EEPECIPIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,028, dated January 26, 1886.
Application filed September 29, 1885. Serial No. 178,535. (No model.)
the following is a specification, reference be-.
ing had therein to the accompanying drawlngs.
The object of my invention is to produce a gate that may adapt itself to any inclination or unevenness of surface where swung, that may be opened by impelling it either forward or backward, and whose weight neither wholly rests upon nor strains its hinges; and it consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of its parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof.
In constructing my gate I form a frame, A, consisting of the longitudinal bars A and the vertical bars 13, recessed at B for reception of the bars A, the frame A being supported upon the truck D and held in a movable position by means of the slide-hinge E. The truck D, having the transverse bar F, recessed at a for reception of the lower gate-bar, A, is secured to a coincident vertical bar of the gate-frame A by means of the brace-bars b, as shown. The transverse bar F of the truck has its ends beveled, as shown at b, and on the beveled or inclined ends of said bar I rigidly secure the axles d of the wheels or rollers e, and thus secure the latter in an inclined position,to permit of their ready adaptation to the curvature made in the opening or closing of the gate.
To the gate-post G is rigidly secured pintle it, having integral therewith arms j, projecting vertically in opposite directions, its upper arm being projected through the eyebolt 2', which is rigidly secured in the gate-frame, and serves as a hinge, and its lower arm through the eyebolt d, which is loosely secured to the gate-frame, to enable, when being opened or closed, the ready adaptation of the gate to any uneven surface. It will be understood, of course, that in opening or closing the gate the ties of the bearing-surface of the truck-wheels as the gate is opened or closed.
The gate being secured at its inner end, its outer end will, when opened in either direction, describe a part of a circle, and to avoid the objection made to gates of this class, as heretofore constructed, I have secured the wheels or rollers supporting the outer end of the gate on a beveled surface formed on each end of the truck, thus permitting the ready adaptation of the same to the curve formed in opening the gate, as above described. In the event of the wheels or rollers of the gate passing over an obstruction or uneven surface when opening the gate, I prevent the cramping of the inner end of the same by loosely securing the lower eyebolt serving as a hinge to the gate-frame, and as the natural tendency of the gate will be to draw on its lower hinge, I thereby provide for the ready adaptation of the gate to the uneven surface, and hence the easy opening and closing of the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the gateframe and the eyebolts serving as hinges connected to arms of a pintle, the lower one of said eyebolts being loosely secured to said gate-frame, of the truck having its transverse bar provided with beveled ends, whereon are secured wheels or rollers, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the gate secured by eyeboltsto the arms of the pintle, the lower one of said eyebolts being loosely secured thereto, of the truck consisting of a transverse bar provided with beveled ends, whereon the wheels or rollers are secured, said truck being connected by bracebars to the gate-frame, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the gate and the eyebolts serving as hinges secured to the arms of a pintle, of the truck and the wheel or rollers secured on the beveled or inclined ends of In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the transverse bar of said truck, substantially presence of two witnesses. as shown and described.
4E. The combination, with the swinging gate, DELOS GILES. 5 of the truck having the transverse bar prov vided with beveled ends and the wheels se- \Vitnesses: cured thereon, substantially as shown and de-' HORACE B. PECK, scribed. l O. P. THAYER.
