G. O. BOVEY.
I GATE HINGE. N0.- 354,383. Patented Dec. 14, 1886.
FIG.l.
N1 PETERi Pholulikhupflpficn Washington. 0.6.
e e, that pass, also, through perforated ears UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE O. BOVEY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
GATE-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,383, dated December 14, 1886.
Application filed duly 15, 1886. Serial No. 208.046. (No model.)
I 0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. BOVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges, of which the'following is a specification, reference beinghad therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a special hinge for the support of those slatted gates which slide longitudinally and then swing around so as to be opened at a right angle to their closed position. I accordingly provide two ordinary posts, to one of which the slatted gate is locked, while the other post is furnished with eyebolts that receive pivots. wherewith perforated ears are coupled to said bolts, which ears project from the inner one of a pair of cheek-plates. These cheek-plates are duplicates of each other, and have at bottom a fork that admits the upper edge of one slat, while the lower edge of the slat immediately above rides on a vertical wheel journaled between said plates. Furthermore, each cheek-plate is furnished with a pair of horizontal arms, and each arm has journaled in it a small roller, two of which bear against the outer side of the slat that runs on the vertical wheel, while the other two rollers bear against the inner side of said slat, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a front elevation showing a gate suppor ted upon my improved hinge, the gate being closed. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear elevation of the hinge. Fig. 4 is an end elevation showing the hinge attached to the gate-post. Fig. 5 is a plan of the hinge.
A represents the lock-post, B the hingepost, and O D a pair of the slats or rails, of an ordinary sliding gate, one edge of the post B being chamfered off, as atb, to admit the proper insertion of eyebolts E E, (seen in Fig. 4,) said bolts being traversed by pivots F F of the rear cheek-plate, G.
G is the front cheekplate, and g is a short bolt connecting the plates G G and serving as a journal for the roller or vertical wheel H that supports the slat O.
I is a fork at the lower end of these cheekplates, which fork receives the upper edge of slat D. Each cheek-plate terminates with horizontal arms J J, having small rollersjjjournaled in them and near their ends, which rollers bear against the outer and inner sides of the slat O, as seen in Fig. 4..
From this description it is evident that the gate, after being unlocked from the post A, can be readily run back on the roller H, the upward extensions of cheek-plates G G coacting with the fork I in keeping the gate in a vertical position. After the gate has been run back a sufficient distance, itcan then be swung around at a right angle to its previous position,to permit the passage ofa wagon, thisturning being effected by the hinge swinging on the pivots e e.
I am aware of the gate-hinges seenin the patents of G. F. Bissell, November 16, 1869, No. 96,771; G. W. Addis, July 22, 1879, No. 217,720, and O. A. Young, June 21, 1881, No. 243,339. Therefore my claim is not to be construed as an attempt to cover the peculiar hinges seen in either of these references.
I claim as my invention- In combination with posts A B and slatted gate 0 D, the withindescribed hinge, consisting of the eheek-plates G G, having a fork, I, at bottom, a wheel, H, journaled between them and terminating at top with horizontal arms J J, carrying rollers j j, that bear against the opposite sides of slat O, the inner cheekplate, G, being provided with perforated ears F F, to admit pivots e e, wherewith said hinge is hung upon eyebolts E E, projecting from the post B, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE C. BOVEY Witnesses:
J AMns H. LAYMAN, SAML. S. CARPENTER.
