WARREN N. BOWERS, OF JEFFERSON, ALLEN COUNTY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO HENRY C. BOWERS, OF NEV HAVEN, INDIANA.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,361, dated October 23, 1883.
Application filed April 3, 1883. (Model.)
To (LZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN N. BowERs, of Jefferson township, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art .to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to th e accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication Figurel is aside view of the gate, Fig. 2, a reverse view of the gate; Fig. 3, a view of the gate open; Fig. 4, detail views of the beam, and Fig. 5 an end view partly in section.
This invention relates to improvements in gates, more particularly in sliding gates. Its object is to produce a gate which can easily and quickly be opened for footpassengers or wagons.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letters A A indicate the gate-posts, between which' is the way in which the gate R moves. This gate has the usual vertical and horizontal rails, b b b2, and brace b3. Two of the horizontal rails extend at b* beyond the vertical rail b, so as to form catches which engage slots a in post A. The other post, A, is recessed out at a', and has at its bottom a pintle, a2. On this pintle fr is hung one end of a beam, C, and on the outside of this end is secured a roller, D, Whose axle d is turned up and extends above the beam. To the other end of this beam C is secured a flange, E, having a recess, c, be-
tween, in which is pivoted a roller, F, the pe riphery of which comes abovey the beam. Projecting from the top of this flange E is a pin, e. At its inner end this flange is curved, as shown at e2. The beam C, with its Bange, is placed in the gate-frame on the inside of the brace b3, the roller F bearing against the under side of the second rail from the bottom, the roller D, whichV is larger, bearing on both this rail and the bottom rail, and `the upturned end of the axle d and the pin e resting On the top of the beam C is made a projection or catch, c, and a latch, L, hinged to the gate, is adapted to engage such projection or catch. This latch is operated by a cord, Z, which passes through a loop, Z', and a bar, Z2, to the other side ofthe gate. The gate is thus supported upon the roller of the beam C, which is held by the pintle a2 and wire or chain lH, the said chain also holding the gate in line as it comes on both sides of the latter. The gate being in the position shown in Fig. l, it is only necessary to lift the latch L, disengaging it from the projection c, Vwhen the g'ate can be slid on the roller far enough to ad# mit a foot-passenger, the brace coming up to the roller D. To admit vehicles the beam O is swung upon the pintle a2, the gate turning across the gateway, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl 1. The sliding gate B, beam O, having the roller F, pin e, and roller D, with its upturned axle d, post A, and its pintle a2, the wire" H, and button K, all connected and arranged substantially as described. f
2. The combination of the sliding gate B, beam O, having the projection c, roller F, pin e', and roller D, with its upturned axle d, the post A', having the pintle c2, the wireI-I, button K, and latch L, with its cord l, all co1nbined, constructed, and arranged as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WARREN N. RowERs.
Witnesses:
JOHN BALYARD, HIRAM HALLOPETER.
