" UNITED STATES PATENT Garret-3.
JOHN A. BEltSTLER-,OF MERION, PENNSYLVANIA.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,626, dated April 18, 1882,
Application filed February 13, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BERSTLER, of Merion, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders; and ldo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the'inventiomwhich will enable others skilled in the art to which it a-ppertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and effieienttemporary binder for letters, papers, bills, &c.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a bottom view.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a n-shapcd casting, one arm of which,
a, is formed with a broad face, I), which is curved outwardly at its lower end, d. The other arm, a, is formed with an inclined mortise or slot, B, at its lower end.
0 isthe adjustable and removable clampingjaw, the entire front surface of its enlarged inner end, 0, being curved and provided with transverse grooves or serrations a. The shank fofjaw U, which works in mortise B, may be provided with a curved shoulder, f,- to increase 0 the capacity of the binder, and lateral nibs or shoulders FF are provided to prevent it from entering too far into slot B. y
In practice the papers are inserted between the face D and curved and serrated end of jaw O, the latter serving to bind them firmly without danger of tearing or mutilation. The downward tension on the movable jaw G exerted by the weight of the papers only serves to more firmly hold them in position. By liftingjaw O as high as possible and then drawingit forward it can be entirely withdrawn from'inclined slot B.
shown, so that it will readily hold the papers at whatever height it is elevated. By this construction the clamping-jaw may be removed when desired, and it also tends to the better and 'readier' adaption of the position of the clamping-jaw in respect to an increased. or di minished number ot'papers.
I do not wish to be understood as claiming any part of Chambers-s invention, my claim being simply for my own improved construction and arrangement of parts, as herein shown and. specified.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- As an improvement in temporary binders, the combination, with the casting A, having the arm a,in the lower cndot' which is formed an inclined mortise or slot, B, of the adjustable and removable clamping-jaw O,hav'ing the entire surface'of its inner end curved, and provided near its rear end with lateral nibs F, to prevent it from entering too far into slot or mortise B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto atfixcd my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A.- BERSTLER.
