Adjacent their inner ends, the two folds Ilia and ISD lie against each other to minimize the spacing between the bifurcated arms I5d of the hub I5.
To rotate the reel, a hand crank is provided on the right end of the axle I4, the arm 25 of the crank having a slot 25a. (Fig. 2) whereby it can be slipped over the end of the square axle I4. and be removably retained on the shaft by a link 26 having an eye 26a (Fig. 1) at one end that engages the slot 25a, and having a pin portion 26h that extends through a transverse hole provided therefor in the axle I4. During winding, the handle is prevented from slipping off the end of the axle by the link 26.
In Fig. 1 the reel is shown mounted on a table top 21, to which it is detachably clamped by a pair of spring wire clamps 28, which are of approximately U shape. 'I'he end of one leg 28a (Fig. 2) of each clamp is extended through an eye 29a in the upper end of a pin 29 that extends through an aperture provided therefor in the base I and is upset on the underside to prevent its escape but not prevent its rotation. The end of the clamp arm 28d beyond the leye 29a is bent as shown at 28h to prevent escape of the arm from the eye. The free end of the other arm 28e of the clamp 28 may be bent into a ring 28d for engagement by the operators finger vto facilitate the placing and removal of the clamps.
When not in use the reel can be folded into acompact form by simply forcing the hubs I5 `t0- ward each other along the axle I4, the structure folding as shown in Fig. 6 into the form shown in Fig. 7. The folding movement may be conveniently started by pressing the standards I2 toward each other, and completed by pressing the bars I'I together and toward the base IIJ. To lock the reel in folded position against the opening force exerted by the torsion springs 20, a latch 30 is provided on the outer face of each end member II, which latches are rotated to engage the ends of the axle I4. The ends of the axle are supported laterally, when in folded position, by a slot IIb in the upper edge of each end member II. The handle is folded as shown in Fig. 6 prior to collapse of the standards, so that it lies on top of the axle. The clamps 28, after being disengaged from the table top, are rotated on the pins 29 to lie flat on the base I0, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. To center the axle longitudinally when the device is folded, a stop 3I is preferably provided at the center of the axle, which is engaged between the two hubs I5 `when the device is folded.
A reel as disclosed, in which the bars I1 are ten inches long and have a radius of about ve inches, will support many hundreds of feet of fishing line in loose relation for rapid drying, and can be folded into a space one and ve eighths inches Wide, one and seven eighths inches high, and twelve and one half inches long.
An advantage of the construction is that there are no loose parts to become lost, every part be-y ing connected to the rest, both in the open and closed positions of the device.
Another advantage is that the device can be inexpensively constructed because nearly all.
parts thereof can be made of either sheet metal or wire. Only the hubs I5, bearings I3, and axle I4 must be formed by other methods.
Although for the purpose of explaining the invention, a particular embodiment thereof has been shown and described, obvious modifications i will occur to a person skilled in the art, anc dd not desire to be limited to the exact details shown and described.
I claim:
1. A foldable reel comprising: an elongated base; a pair of standards each hingedly secured at one end to said base for swinging movement between an erect position approximately perpendicular to said base and a folded position adjacent a'ndlapproximately"parallel to said base member; an axle ;"a pairpf'li'ub's slidable longitudinally on said axle; each hub having a bearing rotatably connected therewith, for rotatably supportingsaid hubs for rotation about the axis of said axle; means hingedly connecting said respective bearingsto the other ends of said respective standards for rotation of the bearings with respect to the standards about an axis parallel to the axes of swinging movement of said standards on said bas; a plurality of spokes hingedly -connected to each hub for swinging movement with respect thereto between positions extending radially from the hub and positionsA substantially parallel to said-axle, the spokes onl one hub being juxtaposed to the respective spokes of the other hub; bars extending between each juxtaposed pair of spokes andhingedly connected to the free ends thereof for swinging movement in the plane of these spokes; and means for nor'y mally retaining said standards in erect position.
2. A reel according to claim 1 including spring elements for urging said standards from 'folded toward erect positions. l
3. A reel according to claim 2v including stepsr on said base for blocking movement of said standards past erect positions.
4. A reel according to claim 1 in which eachy standard consists of a U shaped wire with the bottom of the U hingedly secured to said base,
said bearings havev external, diametrically oppoi site recesses, and the free ends of said U shaped:l wire being angled to extend into said recesses and thereby hingedly support said hubs.
5. A reel according to claim 1 including cooperating means on saidaxle and hubs for prevent-l ing relative rotation therebetween and maintainf, alignment with ing each hub and its spokes in the other hub and its spokes.
