Referring to the drawings, the grinding machine shown therein comprises a reciprocable Work holding table It, and associated therewith is a grinding wheel l2 mounted on the shaft of a drive motor it. The wheel may be adjustable in the usual manner relative to the table in order to properly present it to a workpiece mounted thereon.

This dressing member is adapted for being driven in rotation as The dressing member in Figure 1 is shown as having a single row of individual dressing elements therearound and thus can be employed for dressing a wheel to the shape shown in Figure 2 wherein a single groove 36 is formed around the periphery of the wheel. However, a plurality of rows of individual elements may be mounted in the dressing member as shown in Figure 4, and the device can thus be utilized for forming a plurality of annular grooves around the wheel.
It will be understood that the grooves referred to above could be annular or could be spiral around the wheel in the manner of a thread. The particular form of groove is determined by relative movements between the wheel and dressing member during the dressing cycle.
In utilizing the dressing device both the wheel and the dressing device are driven, but at different peripheral speeds. The wheel is then moved into engagement with the dressing device and its periphery is formed. thereby as the dressing member rotates and carries the individual elements into cutting engagement with the wheel.
It will be noted that the individual elements not only cut the wheel due to the diamond grit par- 3 ticles in the said elements, but also provide a picking action, by means of which the bonding of the wheel is crushed, thereby preventing the wheel periphery from being too smooth and slow cutting.
Due to the aforementioned picking action, which would cause a certain radial impact on the individual dressing elements, it may be desirable to provide each thereof with a shoulder as indicated at 38 in Figure 6, and which shoulder will provide for positive radial positioning of the individual dressing elements.
A dressing tool constructed of individual dressing elements according to this invention provides for a very rapid dressing action and results in a sharp wheel which is highly accurate in configuration and therefore produces accurately shaped workpieces.
It will be understood that this invention is susceptible to modification in order to adaptit circumference of said flange, tool members having abrasive heads of a sintered material containing silicon carbide extending radially from said flange and tapered body portions supporting said abrasive heads, said body portions being seated in one end of said bores, fastening meansextending into said bore from the opposite end of said bores 4 and detachably holding said tool members in said bores.
2. In a dressing tool for grinding wheels, a rotatable wheel having an axially projecting annular peripheral flange, a plurality of rows of radial inwardly tapered and co -planar bores equally spaced around the circumference of said flange, tool members having abrasive heads of a sintered material containing silicon carbide and diamond grit extending radially from said flange and tapered body portions supporting said abrasive heads, said body portions being seated in one end of said bores, and fastening means extending into said bore from the opposite end of said bores and detachably holding said tool members in said bores.
