991,857. Grinding. F. FENOCEHIO, and G. MAZZA. Jan. 22, 1964 [Jan. 25, 1963], No. 2823/64. Heading B3D. A method of dressing a grinding wheel 7 of a machine tool comprises using a rotary dressing tool 1 armed circumferentially with diamonds 2, rotating the wheel, rotating the tool, and traversing and feeding the tool in relation to the wheel. The dressing tool 1 is of conical shape with a large number of small diamonds 2 extending therefrom both axially and radially and has a tapered shank 1a received in a mandrel 6a which is rotatably mounted in a support 5 and driven by a flexible drive 9 from a motor 19. The support 5 has a mounting 5a for locating the assembly on slideways 12b on the work carriage 12 of the machine tool, the carriage having head and tail stocks 17, 18 for a workpiece and slideways 12a transverse to the slideways 126. The support 5 may have means for adjusting the tool angularly relative to the slideway. In operation, with the tool and grinding wheel rotating, the tool is traversed and fed relatively to the grinding wheel by hand wheels 14, 15 to dress the flat and cylindrical surfaces of the wheel. In an alternative embodiment, the flexible drive is connected to the mandrel by bevel gears.
