This invention relates to improvements in cigarette cases and more particularly to an ash receptacle for a cigarette case. One of the objects of this invention is to provide an ash receptacle in a cigarette case which is neat and compact and which can be contained in the conventional sized cigarette case.

Another object is to provide a cigarette case having an ash receptacle which has an opening externally of the case and Which does not interfere with the functions of the case.

Another object is to provide an ash receptacle which can be applied to conventional cigarette cases or which can be used and carried independently thereof as a smokers ash receptacle.

In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inelusive, the cigarette case comprises a pair of cover portions [0 and I2 connected at one end by a hinge I4 and closable at the other by a snap latch It. The usual spring pressed clips l8 are provided for holding the cigarettes in position within the casing.

Within the cover portion [0, I secure my ash receptacle, generally indicated at 20. The receptacle comprises a casing 22 formed of a bottom 23, side walls 24 and ends walls 26 secured together. The receptacle is open at its top as at 28. The side walls 24 each terminate in overhanging lips 30 running the full length of the side. Each lip is depressed from the top as at 32 so that there is a bead 34 the full length of the side. When the container is soldered or otherwise permanently secured to the cigarette casing as at 20, a space 38 is provided between the underside of the cover In and the lips 30. This space provides the trackway 40 for the sliding cover 42, presently to be described.

In the cover of the cigarette casing I provide a rectangular shaped cutout 44 which is opened or closed by the sliding of the cover 42. The cover 42 has a plurality of raised projections 45 which engage indented portions 46 in the inside of the cover I!) to lock said cover in closed position. A projection 48 in the slideable cover 1 Claim. (Cl. 20638) 42 is used for engagement by the fingers of the hand for sliding the cover, to cover and uncover the opening 44. Adjacent the opening 44 of the cover are a pair of V-shaped notches 50 permitting :insertion and removal of the slide cover 42.

The operation of the device is as follows:

When the slide cover 42 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1, the opening 44 is exposed to permit the cigarette or cigar ashes to be dumped into the container. The slide cover can then be slid to the left as viewed in Fig. 1 to completely close the opening. When in this closed position, the contents in the ash receptacle will be completely sealed in the container and will not drop out. The contents can be emptied by sliding the slide cover to again expose the opening. By sliding the cover 42 further to the right as viewed in Fig. 1, the opening 44 is increased and a partially smoked cigarette can be placed or stored in the receptacle. It will become extinguished when the cover is closed.

In a conventional cigarette case the opening 44 can extend approximately half the length of the cover 1 0 with the slideway extending the full length. The slide cover should be longer than one-half of the length of the case, so that when it is slid to uncover the opening, the projection 48 will be readily accessible to be grasped by the fingers. The width'of the ash container should be about the space occupied by two cigarettes. Thus, by using this ash container with the conventional sized cigarette case, the cigarette cases carrying capacity is reduced by two. If desired, the cigarette case can be widened from the conventional size to that necessary to accommodate one additional cigarette in each cover, then by reducing the carrying capacity by virtue of the ash container, a full pack of cigarettes can still be retained. The operation of my ash container does not interfere in any way with the cigarette case.

In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, I provide a smokers ash receptacle which can be carried independently of a cigarette case or which may be soldered to the cigarette case. This construction comprises a casing having a bottom 62, side walls 64 and end walls 66, all secured together. The side walls 64 each terminate in overhanging lips 66 running the full length of the side. Each lip is depressed from the top as at 68 to provide a bead 10 running the length of the side. A top 12 is press fitted or otherwise secured over the beaded portion 10 to form the top of the container 60. A space 14 of a cigarette case or inserted in a case with 10 the top portion facing inside of the cigarette case so as to be accessible when the covers are in open position like that shown in Fig. 2.

What I desire to secure by Letters Patent is: A combination cigarette case and ash receptacle comprising a pair of hinged sections each of which is adapted to contain cigarettes, one of said sections having a relatively small opening therein, an ash receiving compartment secured to the under side of said last mentioned section in alignment with said opening, the volume of said compartment being relatively small in relation to that of said-case, said compartment having side and end walls with the marginal edges of said side walls being bent inwardly and terminating substantially in planes coinciding with the edges of said opening, said marginal edges being offset from the plane of the top of said compartment to provide longitudinal guide ways, and a closure member slidably movable in said guide ways for closing said opening.
