UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUISIANA P. WEBSTER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO DOUGLAS PENDLETON'AND MICHAEL NEWMYER, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
LADYYS SLEEVE-GRIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,552,'dated March 28, 1882.
Application filed December '1, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUISIANA P. WEB- sTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Sleeve-Gripes, of which the followingisaspecification, reference bein g had therein to the ac-.
coinpanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing the application of my device, and Fig. 2 a View of the device itself.
The object of my invention is to provide a neat and simple little device by means of which a lady can hold fast the short tightlyfitting sleeves oftan under-garment on her body while putting on an over-garment, thereby preventing the under-sleeves from slipping upthe arm.
My invention consists in the combination of griping-jaws with a looped flexible attachment, which mayor may not be adjustable, and which is so applied to the arms of the griping-jaws that when the latter gripe the edge of a sleeve they can be made to hold it securely by the action of the thumb on the said flexible attachment, as will be fully understood from the following description.
A A designate two griping-jaws, which are preferably made broad, as shown, so that they will seize and firmly hold a piece of cloth, as theend of a sleeve. Thesejaws, which may or may not be provided with serrations, are on the ends of the levers B B, the fulcrum of which is at c. The ends of the two leversB B, opposite the jaws A A, have eyes b b through them, and to the eye I) is fastened a strong cord, C, which is passed through the eye I), that acts asakind of pulley when the said cord is drawn taut, for the purpose of causing the griping-jaws to forcibly approach each other and seize the edge of a sleeve. The cord C is formed into a loop, 67, which is adjustable for shortening or lengthening it by means of the sliding gripe D or other suitable device. Between the lever-arms to which the gripingjaws are applied is a spring, S, which may be of the U form shown, or of any other suitable form, and which acts by recoil to open the jaws and release them from a sleeve when the tension on the cord 0 is removed.
I have thus described one practicable mode of carrying out my invention, and I desire to be understood as not confining myself to the precise construction of the device shown as the invention-via, a gripingdevice and a looped cord. It may be constructed in a variety of ways to present a neat and handsome appearance.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination,in a sleevegripe, of the spring-actuated jaws and a draw-cord for closing the same, having a thumb-loop formed on it, substantially as described.
2. The springactuated griping-jaws, the draw-cord, and the adjustable loop of the cord, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the griping-jaws A A, the pivoted levers B B, the eyes I) b, the draw-cord, the loop,and a griping-slide therefor, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUISIANA P. WEBSTER.
