UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
THOMAS E. BULGER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
WHISTLING TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS E. BULGER, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whistling Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective, and Fig.2 a longitudinal vertical section, of my toy, the nature of which consists in the employment of a whistle provided at its lower end with a flexible tube having its opposite end plugged, and in which is inserted a small quantity of water.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use the invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A designates a suitable tube having the notch 6 cut therein, and supplied with plug (1, which is formed in the usual manner for making whistles. The lower or outer end of tube A is left open but upon it is slipped the indiarubber tube B, with its outer end securely plugged, as indicated in Fig. 2. If, now, a few drops of water be inserted at notch c or at the upper end of tube A, so that it will enter the flexible tube, by blowing in tube A and grasppart of Letters Patent No. 255,250, dated March 21, 1882 Application filed February 8, 1852. (No model.)
ing the flexible tube between the finger and thumb a great variety of pleasing effects or musical sounds may be produced, for it is evident that as the water is forced nearer the lower end of the tube A it will cause or induce an ascending musical scale, and vice versa, as the water is permitted to descend. A little practice will enable any one to perfectly imitate the notes and trill of a canary or other bird.
This application of a flexible tube in which water is inserted may, with suitable mechanical appliances, be applied to the pipes of an organ for turning or varying the tone of its pipes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a suitable whistling tube or pipe with a flexible tube containing water or otherliquid, substantially asherein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affiXmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS E. BULGER.
