Description
April 1951 v R. WHNIKKA 2,547,353
LOSS PREVENTING ATTACHMENT FOR CAPS Filed July 23, 1947 Inventor Raymond m'mikka W a Attorneys Patented Apr. 3, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,547,352 I LOSS PREVENTING ATTACHMENT FOR CAPS Raymond Wiinikka, Dean's, Mich. Application July 23, 1947, Serial No. 762,898
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in caps for the necks of containers, tanks or the like and more particularly to means for connecting the cap to a neck which permits free opening and closing movement of the cap and secures the cap to the neck against misplacement or loss when in its open position.
An important object of the invention is to provide a cap attaching device whereby the cap is held in an outwardly disposed open position to prevent interference of the cap with the filling or emptying of the container.
A further object is to provide a device of this 1 character of simple and practical construction,
which is efiicient and reliable in use, easy to attach in position without necessitating any changes or alterations in construction of the cap or neck, and which is otherwise Well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing the cap supported in an open position;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the cap closed;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the neck with the cap detached from its support.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the neck of a tank or container (not shown) and to the inside of which is secured a substantially rectangular vertical plate 6 having forwardly projecting flanges I at its side edges, the flanges being formed with vertical slots 8.
A connecting bar 9 has its lower end positioned between the flanges 1 and is formed at its lower side edges with outwardly projecting lugs I0 slidably engaged in the slots 8 for vertical and swinging movement therein.
The upper portion of bar 9 is bent at an inclined angle from its lower portion and is attached at its upper. end to the underside of the center of a cap II by means of a screw l2 to rotatably connect the cap to the bar for threading the cap on the neck when a screw cap is ZClaims. (o1. 22.0-98.5)
of the neck 5to support the bar 9 and cap II in a raised position on the neck, when the cap is open, .the inclined upper portion of the bar holding the cap in a laterally disposed position atone side of the neck to afford uninterrupted access to the neck for filling or discharging purposes, as shown in Figure l.
When the cap is closed, the bar 9 is'completely concealed in 'the neck.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a hended by the spirit of the invention as herein employed, and to permit free rotation of the described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. The combination with the neck of a container of a cap for the neck, and connecting means between the cap and neck and including a guide carried by the neck, and a connector carried by the 'cap and slidably engaged with the guide, said connector including a tongue projecting laterally from the surface of the connector and resting on an edge of the neck to support the cap in an elevated position when removed from the neck.
2. The combination with the neck of a container of a cap for the neck, an internal guide slot in the neck, a rigid support in the neck having one 'end slidably engagedin the guide slot and having the cap rotatably connected to its other end, and. a tongue projecting laterally at one side of the support and engaging and gripping the edge of the neck to support the cap in a raised position on the neck when the cap is removed therefrom.
RAYMOND WIINIKKA.
